Glad to hear that you enjoyed it.

And that last bit is why I feel alot didn't like it as much. Because there was no games and it changed things up.

Caught this one today.

Even if it didn't have the big "PART 1" label at the beginning, this film just screams that it is half of a whole story. Not that I didn't enjoy the film, as I did quite like it, just pointing that out

When I first walked out I said that Catching Fire was better...but thinking about it some more, I think I may have actually preferred this one. Going to require a rewatch at some point probably as they are so different.

Just saw the movie today. It's pretty much what I expected. Pacing is not as good as CF, imo, but the movie covers a lot of character and plot-related ground that needed to be covered. It is pretty much what I remember from the book, and I'd say I'm okay with the movie overall, but it rarely blew me away.

There are a few good scenes I love though: the District 8 battle is as cool as I always imagined it would be, and I was impressed by J-Law singing the Hanging Tree (and the dam explosion scene is cool). The ending covert op is not bad either. So those scenes make the whole thing worthwhile. Still, I expect Part 2 to blow this away (I'm hoping the battle with the mountain fortress will be an awesome action setpiece).

As far as all the complaining about splitting up the book into two movies...get over it. It was a pretty complex book with a lot of ground to cover, especially pathologically; I'd rather see two movies that take their time than one rushed effort with stuff cut out.

I'd grade this a 3.5/5, but rounded up to 4/5 on the poll. Comparatively, I grade CF a 4/5 and the first movie 3.5/5. Looks to me that it'll be the even-numbered ones that totally rock.

Talking about the movie in the office today, somebody was griping about how it's all drama and not enough action.

I still fail to see why that's a valid criticism.

I dunno why, but both Catching Fire and Mockingjay Part 1 had the same problem.

In Catching Fire, Katniss and Peeta visit the entire country, including the Capitol, and then go back to District 12. Then they go back to the Capitol again. Perhaps it was unavoidable, but the merry-go-round business made things feel repetitive.

Same thing happened in Mockingjay Part 1.
[Show spoiler]Katniss is in District 13, visits District 12, returns to District 13, and then goes back to District 12 again.
Something could've been condensed here.

Sure, it probably could have been condensed...at the risk of deviating from the events of the books. The back-and-forth is just part of the stories; each scene contributed to the development of the characters and their ongoing political battles. Filmmakers can either adapt the story faithfully, or change things up and upset the purists and fans.

I understand the gripe in that people want to see action based on the prior two films....but I understand the more real point of view that this movie was the set up to the finale and did exactly what it set out to do

We already knew Katnis was fragile emotionally. We already knew she was a reluctant leader. We already knew that she really only cared about saving her loved ones, like Peta and Prim. All of this was established with excellent pacing in CF.

Mockingjay Part 1 was a retread of all of that, and not much else. Someone earlier said Part 1 could've consisted of the first 20 minutes of the final film. I argue 10-15. Yes they knew they could make a buttload, and by opening it around Thanksgiving, it was a win-win scenario no matter how bad it was.

Oh don't get me wrong, I definitely think this could easily have been one film like the other two were clocking in around 2:30 or 2:45; but for what they wanted to do with it, I thought the film accomplished its job and I enjoyed it.

Sucks this won't even pass GOTG domestically. It could've been the first franchise ever to have the #1 film of the year two years in a row.

I guess people are just looking for all action and nothing else.

But yeah, I agree on that.
