They probably wanted to find out a way to keep Elizabeth Banks in more of the movie. If they stuck to the books she probably wouldn't show up till the second part. (From what I remember, it's been 3 years since reading it)

Yeah, but it makes sense to me. Effie wasn't much more than a Capitol kook in the book and she isn't missed in Mockingjay, but the films gave us a bit more nuance and she's become a fan-favourite character, so I think it's right they've carried her over. In the book it's her prep-team that ends up in D13 but it wouldn't make sense in the film because we barely saw them in the previous movies, so the filmmakers will probably give their story beats to her.

I'm really hoping Finnick and Johanna get more to do in the films than the final book.

They were very thinly drawn in the novels (because book Katniss is a wet blanket) but the CF film make them much cooler. It seems Johanna's story has already been slightly changed, and hopefully Finnick's does too. He doesn't really do too much in Mockingjay if I recall until near the end.

Finnick kinda goes out 'off screen' in the book, or not much is made of his demise at the time, so they'll probably put a much more heroic spin on it in the movie. And why not?

Yeah, most of his role in Mockingjay is worrying about Annie (and their relationship stuff) and then his...yeah. Which came out of nowhere and didn't even contribute much anyway. (though I would spoiler tag some of the above comment for those who haven't read the novel).

And Johanna had minimal "screentime" in the book as well, since we only hear about her stint in the Capitol and she doesn't add much to the last half of Mockingjay.

Though with the teasers, it seems Johanna's experience in the Capitol is much closer to Peeta's than in the novel. With the buildup of a Finnick/Johanna relationship/friendship in the CF movie, it'll be interesting to see how that plays out in the film.

They didn't really interact much in Mockingjay if I recall correctly, which I always found odd, since Katniss had described them as good friends.

Lionsgate have released a new series of character posters for the upcoming third Hunger Games flick. Meet Distinct 13 rebels Cressida (Natalie Dormer), Gale (Liam Hemsworth), Messalla (Evan Ross), Boggs (Mahershala Ali), Castor (Wes Chatham) and Pollux (Elden Henson).

I know that they're going to play with the whole "The Mockingjay lives" deal, but not showing Katniss doesn't seem clever, it's just weird.
They're whipping out all these posters to hold us off with characters we aren't really interested in (except Natalie Dormer)

And c'mon we all know JLaw is the one who's really selling the movies

I think they're trying to let all the other stars shine for a bit before they release the Katniss/J-Law poster. Seeing that's the one most want to see.

Maybe they really made a movie where Katniss wanders in dark tunnels for two hours.
