It would be better to give the user the option of turning in off shifting aspect ratio in the settings. That is a reason to buy physical media for Nolan movies because the IMAX scenes are untouched.
The Dark Knight did indeed have switching aspect ratios on iTunes. I still have that version in my library, in SD.

It does kind of make sense. MI: Fallout has shifting aspect ratio so fixed aspect ratio on iTunes isn't across the board.

Yes also First Man and Aquaman.

However the recent Star Trek (2009 & 2013) movies also have their IMAX scenes cropped on iTunes but not on the physical releases.

Really? Does IM:FO still have IMAX scenes? I haven't checked since I first purchased the movie.

As someone thinking about getting a 4K blu ray player, and whose only 4K experience has come via streaming on Disney+ and ITunes, are the physical disc’s a better picture?

Also, does anyone know why itunes tends not to offer extended cuts in 4K? Batman V Superman, Superman: The Movie, Harry Potter 1 & 2. None of those movies have extended cut options. (This is for the Canadian iTunes/Apple TV store).

Disk vs stream picture quality (for me) is in the same ballpark. Obviously disk is better but it isn't night and day.

Disk vs stream audio quality isn't close at all. Disk audio quality blows streaming audio quality out of the water. But bear in my I have a 5.1 audio set up so I can hear the difference. If you are using the speakers of your TV then you probably wouldn't hear the difference.

iTunes has some of the extras of the disk but oftentimes not all the extras. For example, Lord of the Rings doesn't have all the extras of the disk.

Agreed. Disc is technically better (specs are much better) but I don’t notice a lot of difference perceptually, other than some noticeable banding issues here and there that can be better (but not necessarily eliminated) on disc.

Audio difference is more noticeable if you have a great surround system, although Atmos streaming has been pretty impressive. Listening to a streaming movie with a streaming Atmos track still sounds great to me if I’ve never heard the disc, but between the two the disc is often noticeably better.

With all that said, I will buy all my very favorite movies (my top 10) on 4K blu ray disk because I want the very best quality possible for my favorites even if the difference is marginal.

Yeah, this is me too. More like top 50 or top 100 for me, especially the ones where the audio quality makes the most difference.

How come Saving Private Ryan 4K has Dolby Vision but no Dolby Atmos on iTunes 4K? The 4K disc has an English Dolby Atmos sound mix. How come and is Atmos coming to the iTunes 4k version?

There are a few oddballs like this. I don't think you will get an answer on here.

Terminator Genisys is supposedly Atmos on Vudu and disc, but not iTunes.
Live Die Repeat has no Atmos on iTunes but it does on Vudu.

Thanks for sharing your thoughts Zimmy. I wonder if it's a studio issue thing.

The funny thing is I recall someone else mentioning that earlier on iTunes4K, Saving Private Ryan was in 4K Dolby Atmos and then later it was removed for some reason.

I hope they get it back in 4K Dolby Atmos though!

Not sure if it’s been pointed out here yet but “It’s the Easter Beagle, Charlie Brown” is now 4K DV.

Also, “CATS” is now listed as 4K HDR.

Glad to see It's the Easter Beagle, Charlie Brown is now in 4K DV. That pretty much completes the Charlie Brown holiday specials in 4K DV.

I just checked my version of Incredible Hulk and it is 4K but when you go to the iTunes store the current version is only HD.

Just this week I had to rebuy Amazing Spider-Man because the version I had didn't have iTunes extras but the current version on the iTunes does have the extras.

It's really annoying that movie studios sometimes release several versions of the same movie. I'm not talking extended or director's cuts, I'm talking the theatrical cut of the movie. In my 'hidden' items (Apple doesn't allow you to delete films you can only hide them) I have several movies that I had to hide because I bought a more up to date version of that movie. Like having to buy a 4K upgrade because my version wasn't the version that got automatically upgraded to 4K. Or having to buy the movie again to attain the iTunes extras.

It's no one wonder some people stick to physical media, the studios can't come into your house and delete the extras.

Incredible Hulk is showing as 4K HDR in US store via ATV.
Us UK folk have never had it in 4K which is a tad annoying.

The US is very lucky to have the VUDU/HULU 4k option for MCU movies.

Incredible Hulk is a Universal title, not Disney.
