Oh don't gimme that crap.

That's Hollywood. How many mainstream actors break out of the mold that they best fit in. For that matter, Harrison Ford is a perfect example!

He should take his lot and run with it. Be the goofy and loveable dude until he can't do it anymore. Most people would kill to have his career. But good luck breaking out of that mold.

I think Chris Pratt could actually be really good if he tries and doesn't just play the character as Star Lord in an Indiana Jones outfit. I still think it would be cool to make the new movies set pre-Raiders instead of just rebooting it. You could do one with Abner and a younger Marion set in the 20's or something.

That being said, I would like to see one more with Harrison Ford. If he can still play Han Solo, he can still do Indy. Crystal Skull had a lot of issue, but I didn't feel like Ford's age was one of them. I think you could make a really great movie about old man Indy.

Obviously given I'm straight, I don't look for 'manly' or 'masculine' in Indiana Jones or Chris Pratt anyway. Also: I could take him perfectly 'seriously' in Jurassic World and don't see how he wouldn't be capable of playing Indiana. He's the perfect guy for the job.

What does straight have to so with looking at someone with masculinity?

I think Robert De Niro, Arnold Schwazernegger, Clint Eastwood, Harrison Ford, etc. are all quite masculine actors. It's an attribute and a part of their performance, it doesn't mean you're attracted to them. What a daft thing to say. How do write about films academically if you're unable to write basic stuff like masculinity?

At this point I get the impression whenever Ford does crop up in a role that defined him (Solo, Deckard, Jones) I can't get past the feeling I'm not seeing those original characters many years later with some miles on the clock, but basically Harrison Ford playing dress-up.

I don't know, he just radiates this feeling of "IDGAF, I'm getting paid" lol, but it comes across in his performance. Maybe that's just me though. BTW, I'm aware I've not seen SW7 or BR2, so maybe he does kick it up a notch, but I'm not expecting miracles.

I don't ever have the need to use the words 'manly' or 'masculine'. To me, that wouldn't be examining an actor's role in a film properly. There's much more to it than that and in the course I do there is a lot more to say about visual style and sound.

I reckon many women probably find Chris Pratt 'manly' anyway. I don't even see how it is essential to Indiana Jones' character.

Actually when I was talking about Goodfellas and The Public Enemy way back when. We had to refer to how the style and sound reflected on their masculinity...but I guess that is totes not straight yo!

We aren't told what to refer to; we have a series of questions to choose from and then it's up to us what we want to talk about related to said question. Personally, I would find the mob's role and how the use of sound reflects the danger/unsettlement of life in the mob plus the use of camera angles etc... to emphasise the power they hold in the movies more interesting to talk about (to take your examples).

Then what the hell were you watching?!? Look at EVERY SINGLE review or article about the character of Indiana Jones since 1981. The word "rugged" is in every single one of them. If you don't get that, then you don't get the character.

And, fyi, I just saw Chris Pratt on Billy on the Street. Do we REALLLLLLY want a balding Indiana Jones? No thanks.

Agree, don't really want Pratt. He would be a little too jokey IMO, and doesn't come across as rugged. Also he's in too many franchises already, I don't like this trend of the same actors being in every franchise.

My choice for Indiana Jones in a fifth film is Harrison Ford.

I still don't think Ford was the problem with the last Indy movie (which I actually like). I think the problem was that there were way too many uninteresting side characters added to the mix. Indy should have no more than 3 people running around with him. It all got a little overcrowded, especially when most of the new characters were just there to further the plot along.

Shia Labeouf or Chris Pratt? for the new movie. AND YOU HAVE TO PICK ONE.

I think the problem was a too-silly tone matched with a fake digital look. I honestly think it boils down to that. The first three had some too-silly moments, but the real, gritty look balanced it out. Crystal Skull felt like a silly cartoon AND looked like one way too often.

Ford was fine. Good, even.
