Jesus, can we get a regular edition yet? It's been a few years now and you'd think Sony would finally release one. I stopped buying steelbooks and have no intention of buying the steel nor paying the crazy prices people are asking for on ebay for the regular one. You'd think such a prestige title would be getting a regular release eventually from Sony...

It ain't 2005 anymore. Despite the forum we're on and the passion of the devotees of this hobby, discs are on the fast downswing, and that's being kind. The world of 2024 is dominated by streaming. What discs are released are frequently limited edition boutique labels since the majors stopped caring by and large. In a real sense, the issue isn't that a release " only gets a crappy steelbook", it's that it gets released at all, period. |

I'm not a massive fan of steelbooks but I don't think they'll release this in a standard case any time soon. I think they will just keep reprinting the steelbook.

Zavvi link is live. Got an email about it too this morning. Edit: Looks like it’s already sold out. I got my order in at 9:30 so it went pretty quick. Last edited by KingBoo; 04-24-2024 at 09:19 AM. Reason: Updated stock info |

One of my main takeaways since starting buying discs again last year is that I have no reference point for availability. I always thought of ‘home video’ as mass produced commodities but with 4K a lot of it seems to be ‘this the price, it’s here until it’s not, and this premium packaging is all we’re doing’ so I’m noticing I’m more often paying full preorder price just to make sure I can guarantee a copy. |

'home video' in general no longer means mass produced.

Bingo. People keep getting surprised when pre-orders for new studio product sell out, and/or get released and still have major supply problems (Oppenheimer, the Camerons, CC vol 4), some even cite it as a reason why physical media isn't dead, but they're all part of the same malaise: home video disc as a mass market product is dying if not dead. Or should I say that high-quality disc is the thing that's dying, as DVD still outsells Blu and UHD combined across most weeks. Boutiques keep going because they don't press untold thousands of units, while many rely on some form of limited edition model to drive enough sales to cover their costs. The studios are essentially adopting that same model, some using LEs to push initial sales while most are restricting the amount of product they're producing (tho it's worth pointing out that Sony and Warners haven't tended to print a lot of copies of catalogue product since the start of UHD).

The irony is that I remember some laserdisc diehards bemoaning the fact that DVDs were cheap enough to be readily available to the "masses", including (horror of horrors!) Walmart. |

That's just it, back in the high days of DVD and Blu AND when they were mass produced. Back when most of us here did those major holiday hauls both in-store and online buying 50-100 discs at a time for $5-$10 each. Basically the studios scaled and started producing less which has led to the higher prices.

I got the US 4K last year and finally got around to watching it last night. Loved the picture quality, but unfortunately I had a few skips on my UB820. Just two on the first disc, but there were four or five in the early scene on disc two between Alec Guinness and the American journalist, and then no more throughout the rest of the film.
I rewinded to check on disc two, and could repeat the skips at the same times, so I'm inclined to think this is a problem with the disc rather than the player? I watched the LOTR films on 4K the week before without any skipping so I don't think this player necessarily has problems with UHD100 discs but hard to be sure without having another player to test on. |
