No cinema less than a four-hour plane flight from me ever does non-current movies, with very few exceptions. One of the chains used to regularly run older films, once a month or so, but stopped a couple of years back. They're doing Pulp Fiction on Saturday, the first classic to air in probably a year or so, but I only found out today and already have something on. Dammit.

I've been looking at the theaters showing Lawrence in Colorado. They're all putting the film in their smaller auditoriums, which probably wouldn't be outfitted with the latest 4k projectors anyway.

No respect for the classics.

Why are movies that I really don't like getting 4K UHD's from an 8K negative scan? Why can't movies I want get an 8K negative scan?

Because so few movies are shot in 65mm or larger formats to warrant an 8k scan.

Many 4K transfers are done on 6K or 8K scanners these days by default, you just don't hear much about it. But as Lawrence is large format it had to be done on Imagica XE's which are big mother ****ers with 11K sensors, this was output as 8K data then downrezzed again to 4K for the actual restoration work to take place. The raw 8K scans themselves (8192x3584 rez) have been archived.

I'll be looking forward to this one.

Sadly, I have not yet watched this, but I will definitely be picking up the UHD. I'm just excited to see classics come to UHD. The purchase is to let studios know there's a demand for these types of films on the format.

I blind bought Kwai as well, and that was a success, so I don't see why this wouldn't be a win.

And, more importantly, why do you really not like one of the best movies ever made?

Well, I was considering taking in the Fathom screening this weekend, but none of my local theaters appear to be showing it! I'm just getting too old and lazy to spend an hour+ getting to a less convenient site, 4 hours at the movie, and another hour+ getting home again. Maybe I'll just pop in the Blu-ray. If I hadn't already seen the restoration in 70mm several times, I'd make more of an effort.

If you've never seen Lawrence in a theater, don't be a lazy bum like me-MAKE THE EFFORT!!

This is going to be absolutely glorious. The 4K SDR iTunes stream already looks fantastic.

I own the blu-ray but Ive never seen it in a theater. My dad seen back in the 60's and we plan on going for this screening. Is this basically the 4K restoration that was done in 2012 for the blu?

Ben-Hur needs it badly. The ultrawide aspect ratio means the actual image is only 700 pixels tall in 1080p!

Got out of the Fathom Events presentation just an hour ago. Beautiful presentation. Go see it if you can. They did a good job with this one. For those wondering, our theater had a 15 minute intermission.
