The Irishman announcement caught me by surprise because I genuinely thought it would be a rather long while before Netflix licensed it. I am allowing myself to hope we'll eventually see Buster Scruggs and The Two Popes on disc someday as well.

It's only a month into actual 2020 and Criterion is on an INSANE roll this year. So far, we already have official releases of "Roma", "All About My Mother" and "The Grand Budapest Hotel", they have their NEON deal with "Portrait of a Lady on Fire" and now Netflix officially confirms "The Irishman", as well as "Marriage Story". I honestly am on pins and needles to see what else Criterion does this year and what other Netflix movies this means could see releases.
I'm also personally excited for the Pasolini film, "Teorema", in a couple of weeks.

They've also teased Fellini and Wong Kar-Wai box sets, too!

Oh AND... "Come and See" !!!!

Anyone familiar with me won't be surprised to know that I almost pissed myself when I saw this news.

What a time to be alive!

The Irishman is 3 hours and 29 minutes and 1.85:1 aspect ratio. It’s not out of the realm of possibilities that it’s split into 2 discs. Ben-Hur is a few minutes longer and on 2 discs. So I thought it was a real concern that if they cram it onto 1 disc that compression will be a mess.
Oh my gosh. My bad lmao. Just realized what you all were saying. Carry on.

Yeah, plus the New Year's Day clues of the Fellini, Wong Kar Wai, and Bruce Lee box sets. Also a new release of The Great Escape! I wrote a post in the Criterion thread a little while ago saying it's only January and they've already secured boutique label of the year.

Great news!!
But we still need Other Side of the Wind on disc since it may disappear back into the rights nightmare at any moment.

The Other Side of the Wind is coming as well. The supplements are still being worked on.

It's odd that blu-ray.com doesn't seem to have any news or articles about The Irishman and Criterion release.

I figured I would have to wait longer for a disc announcement, this is excellent news. I’ve held off watching this on Netflix as I strongly prefer discs.

There isn’t really any info other than us knowing a release will happen.

There's been rumors that A24 is also working with Criterion. And with Ari Aster telling people to wait for a disc release of Midsommar Director's Cut, I could absolutely see that being their first A24 release.

Also, I know it's usually out of their normal wheelhouse, but can they also release Gerald's Game and Hush [or can Netflix at least give those two to Scream Factory]. They absolutely deserve their own disc release.

This. I won't be surprised if there's an article about the announcement but apart from that, what else is there to announce right now?

In terms of features, all I'm hoping for is a nice interview with Scorsese and De Niro, the "Irishman In Conversation" piece on Netflix and maybe a few before and after segments of the deaging process.

Given that Radius60 did an absolutely terrible job with the 3+ hr Apocalypse Now on the new Lionsgate Blu-ray then I'd expect a similar sort of shitshow with Da Irishman. I think Criterion use Pixelogic now but, funnily enough, their approach is much the same: just throw bitrate at it and don't optimise it properly. You can get away with it on a 2hr movie without a lot of supplements, sure, but movies that are much longer will fall apart if compressed in this lackadaisical 'set and forget' manner.

Yes, OF COURSE 3½ hours on one disc is doable IF you have competent people doing the work, but Criterion's compressionists make the PG Tips monkeys look like maestros.

...and with content coming from a distributor that actually mandates 4K HDR finishes for new originals. With all the bullshit about "fake 4K" this would be a great opportunity to get some more "real 4K" (including VFX) content out there but nope, it's gone to Cri-****ing-terion. Damn.

I hope Criterion releases this digitally as well. I'd love to have it in both my physical collection and digital iTunes collection.
