Not the biggest fan of the original, but there's no denying it's at least unnerving and original.

I'm in.

I was watching my 4k last week and I was wondering if there was ever a sequel.

Well, now I know.

I'll see it as the first film is really solid, but there's something sad about Mitchell returning and making a sequel after making the highly audacious and original Under the Silver Lake. That film got shafted by A24 and was highly misunderstood by critics and audiences and now it feels like a risk-taking filmmaker is making the safest possible choice for his next film.

I trust and hope he had a great story and willingly returned to it but the cynical part of me fears this was the only way he could find legitimate funding for a project and is hoping to "relaunch himself"

It's not a shot at him. I would be bummed if Ari Aster made Hereditary 2, Jordan Peele made Get Out Again, or Eggers made The Witch Returns.

Amazing news. It Follows is one of my favorite movies. I've wanted this sequel for so long. I didn't think it would actually happen. So glad David Robert Mitchell and Maika Monroe are returning. Will be my most-anticipated movie of whatever year it comes out.

Super excited by this news, as a huge fan of It Follows.

I thought David Robert Mitchell was making a JJ Abrams-produced movie next.

Either way, I look forward to his next project, and this one should be very much worth seeing.

I just hope it's not the sequel that I joked some critics clearly needed at the time of It Follows release. i.e. The Explanation and Subtext Follows (hint: It's not STDs)

My thoughts exactly.

As someone who loathes It Follows, yet loves Under the Silver Lake, this looks very much like Mitchell throwing in the towel. I hope I'm wrong — but I also know that I have very little interest in seeing this.

It Follows was definitely an effective curse film, so it'll be interesting to see where they take this new film, They Follow. Sounds like it expands to more than one demonic force at a time, but many after the infected/cursed. I think Smile is also getting a sequel, as a cursed movie too.

Wasn't David Robert Mitchell working with Anne Hathaway on a project for WB? Either that fell through or Warner put it on the back burner.

The brief description makes it sound like it was going to be a big movie:
Quote:
While the pic is billed as a “thrill-ride” to be shot in IMAX, which will head into production this fall, other details are scarce at present.
Edite: The Variety article claims he is still working on that.

Having the original director return is promising, but I won’t lie, I kind of wish this wasn’t happening. Not saying it will be bad, mind, just that I kind of love the original the way it is and don’t feel the need for a sequel.

Would be nice if this leads to a 4K release of the original in the US.

I know I'm in the vast minority, but I'm not excited about this at all.

I love the original, but a sequel will only detract from the original. Not saying it won't be good, but the lore expansion that will come from this will only take away from the lingering mystery of the original/original's ending. I was more bummed to see returning cast, as at least if it were a new segment of characters it would at least have the possibility of maintining some of the mystery as it could be a prequel OR a sequel without the audience knowing.

I will absolutely see it with an open mind and will be more than happy to be proven wrong.

Sequels never detract from the originals.

Sure if a sequel is anticipated and it's well below par, it's a disappointment. A let down. You might think you'd have been just as well off skipping or if it hadn't been made.

But the detraction of originals by sequels is a completely imaginary concept.

They can if they change the lore. If the sequel ends up being terrible, obviously the first film is still excellent. The issue lies in now we know the purposely vague ending to a film that "wasn't going to get a sequel" is now no longer vague, we know the fate of at least one character after the first film. Even if someone doesn't see the sequel, or decides not to see it, we now know
[Show spoiler]Maika's character
lives, it is no longer a mystery, even if you don't see the film.

In a sense, the creation of the sequel has in fact, altered the original.
