Removing the non-essential items is a better idea. People can go around yellow tape or other barriers unless there's employees keeping an eye all day long, which isn't feasible in these circumstances.

If this rule had been in effect yesterday, I wouldn't have been able to buy the TROS blu-ray at the local Target

Please keep in mind that pretty much every state that has ordered S-I-P will now have a shortfall in their state budget due to lack of sales which generate sales tax. Very few states (if any) tax grocery food. The $1.25B in the $2T stimulus package for states can't be used to make up any short falls in state sales tax.

Here in NM we get the double whammy . . . loss of sales tax revenue and loss of money from oil. $650 million per year was coming into NM from oil.

It's possible it's the total number of tests done. Of course keep in mind that there's obviously more than whatever the numbers here show, but it should give you a good idea of where clusters might be. Queens has a lot, as does parts of Brooklyn where I live (mainly because of the Hasidic Jewish community)

I'm in New York, and I was just informed by a co-worker that a Walmart about 40 miles away has closed off the general merchandise side of the store, and have created a labyrinth of carts (similar to what they do on Black Friday) to go in and out of the store on the grocery side. Inside the store they have caution tape roping off apparel and other departments. Sad part is they also have the Pharmacy and Pets departments blocked off, so if you need medicine or personal hygiene products or food for your pet you have to shop elsewhere.

I hope they do the same at my neighborhood Costco. Every time I drive by it on the way home, there is a long line outside waiting to get in the store. If they clear out the general merchandise for more essential items, then the lines might go away since people shopping for both will be spending less time in the store, and those just standing in line for non-essentials won't go there at all. In the meantime, I'm not going there to waste time in a long queue and will just pay extra for the stuff I normally buy at Safeway (haven't seen a line there yet).

Having the Pharmacy closed makes no sense at all. That is considered an essential item(s). You may not have gotten the real story from your friend. AFAIK, most Walmart have two entrances: food and pharmacy.

On top of it all, the measures that are absolutely necessary to slow the spread of the contagion are going to leave millions unemployed, and possibly lead to thousands of bankruptcies for any businesses that don't get bailed out.

When all is said and done, the pandemic will have cost probably millions of lives and trillions and trillions in damages, and you think the media has overplayed the situation?

i said in my post im not relating it to h1n1. time will tell when this is all over the total numbers.

and how did the media create fear and panic? did you see the NEW numbers they are reporting for projected deaths? DRASTICALLY different from what they started by telling us.....

really? do you really think you are going to die? that is what im talking about fear and panic be spread to the public. media throwing out 1 or 2 young people who died to back up their stance that it can kill anyone, yes, which it can, but will it for 99% of people, probably not.

I was at my local Walmart yesterday at 11:30 AM. Needed to go to the pharmacy to pick up an Rx that my doctor "phoned in" and to drop off an Rx I had for some expensive salve. They told us that we could have both if we gave them 20 minutes. So we walked around the store. Hardly anyone was on the merchandise side of the store.

While I was there I was able to pickup a toilet repair kit I needed. Saved me the time from having to go to Home Depot which is another car ride. So how does Home Depot manage to stay open?

Home Depot sells cleaning products and toilet paper as well. But even besides that, construction is considered essential business because it contributes to infrastructure. And as such, supply stores that feed it are considered essential as well.

You are focused with worldwide. I read the news on 4 different websites (US based) and I see 95% of the news about the COVID-19 pandemic as it relates to the US. The only time I see WW is when something drastic happens.

Again, if we go with linear numbers, from April 2009 to April 2010 here in the US 1000 people died per month. Smoking kills 40,000 per month here in the US. You see a lot of media coverage on that?

The Great Recession: thousands of people losing their homes, almost 900,000 put out of work, corporations losing billions of dollars and banks bleeding red in gushers. What's that in comparison to 1000 people dying from H1N1 monthly? Seasonal Flu kills at least that many per year.

Sure - because Walmart also sells home repair items, like my toilet repair kit, lightbulbs, AC/Heater filters etc.

IMO - it's too much of a draconian move. There will be push back.

we are currently at just over 1100 per month in the USA. which is going to come down over the course of the year, right? so that number will come down into similar proportions of h1n1.

regardless, we wont know the numbers until this is all over.
