I almost teared up watching the T2 featurette on effects a few months back. Winston was vibrant and excited about the future of using CGI to compliment and mix with practical effects to create spectacle more grand and believable than ever before. 10 years later the poor guy was gone and Hollywood decided to just do 99% CGI because it's easier. A real shame.

I felt the same way about that T2 featurette, it was such an eye-opener hearing them guys speak given how dominant computer effects have become in the years since. I was watching Galaxy Quest t' other day and I marvelled at how good the practical aliens were, and who did them? Mr Winston's company, of course.

My sister is getting a Samsung 4K tv. She was one of those "I couldn't care less about HD/UHD" people. That is until she was over one day and wanted me to show her all the features on my tv. lol She said "Holy s**t! I can see the difference now" then she hit her husband on the shoulder and said "We need to get a smart 4K tv!" A few days ago she asked which was better, Vizio or Samsung, because those are the only brands her husband can get through his job. He works for Time Warner Cable. I told her Vizio is good for the price, but Samsung seems to be better overall. I don't think she'll care about upgrading to 4K blu-ray though.

I don't know which Samsung they're going to get, but she said they're going with getting theirs through Time Warner because he can make payments on it. She said if they had Sony as an option, they would definitely choose it over Vizio & Samsung because she liked my Sony X810C.

Well, the "kids" and the rock monster were all CG. I think that's why Shatner wants to do a ST:V special edition, he can have his rock monster and not have it look ridiculous. But stuff like the full sized aliens and pig monster made sense to do only practically. Galaxy Quest was done by ILM who would use the best tool for the best job. The ships were models, but it depended on the shot - when the Protector scrapes its way out of drydock the closeup shot of the ship was CG - the model couldn't be filmed that closely and still hold up. |

AVforums got a 1st hand look at the new sony tvs, and got to see some demos comparing last years tvs to this years tvs.
"Sony actually demonstrated the capabilities of their new TVs by showing the same sequence in SDR on last year's X85C and in HDR on an XD85. The difference was impressive, the images had more depth and brighter highlights but there was also more detail in the brighter and darker parts of the image, whilst colours appeared more saturated and realistic. We then saw the same sequence again but this time comparing the XD85 with the XD93 and again the difference was impressive, with the latter TV's increased peak brightness and wider colour gamut bringing even greater realism to the image. Sony then demonstrated a sequence showing the Las Vegas strip at night on both the XD85 and the XD93 and the latter's superior backlight control and local dimming was evident; with deeper blacks, more detail in the shadows and brighter highlights." https://www.avforums.com/article/son...-hdr-tvs.12344 |

And Sony's are the worst in that regard. I've been to too many of them that are clearly rigged and setup with one display completely screwed up next to the new one setup to look it's best. They are in my opinion the absolute worst when it comes to this at AV shows.

In the AV Forum article and the Flatpanels take on the same demonstration, notice that in the statement about meeting the UHD Alliance Premium specification, Sony carefully avoids any comment about meeting the requirement for black level (.05 nits). My guess is that is the real reason they are not using the UHD Alliance logo on their top of the line 2016 displays. The truth will come out when Flatpanels and others actually get their hands on those displays.
“Sony had placed two XD85 TVs side-by-side to demonstrate 4K with and without HDR, and it was obvious that the larger color gamut and HDR in some ways improved the picture. It had better, more vibrant colors and was able to better boost highlights in the picture. Both XD85 samples were running in Cinema mode, which is often our own choice as a starting point for a calibration. However, the demonstration also revealed some of the LCD technology’s weaknesses; details in the darkest areas of the picture were not as distinct as one could have hoped. This was of course not a perfect set-up and the TVs had not been individually calibrated. We will have to wait and see how well XD85 performs once we receive one for thorough testing. Sony confirmed to us that both XD93 and XD94 meet the criteria for “UHD Premium” in terms of color gamut, peak brightness and resolution. For colors this means at least 90% DCI-P3 coverage (and Rec.2020 processing) and peak brightness of over 1000 nits for HDR video. [What about black level?] However, Sony explains that it has chosen not to back the official “UHD Premium” logo. Instead the company wants to use its own “4K HDR” logo, which will be featured only on TVs." http://www.flatpanelshd.com/news.php...e8TizcrVsAO.99 |

But the ethics of the entertainment business aside, the production of this event….http://svgeurope.org/blog/headlines/...nal-in-4k-hdr/ was not initiated in order to make a demo to show on consumer 4K HDR tvs and thusly encourage the sale of them. Rather, it was done for internal testing purposes and undertaken to evaluate the value of the 4K HDR technology, i.e. the ultimate goal being to determine if HDR capture and delivery could be a viable income source for live sport production - http://www.infrontsports.com/ , in essence, is the picture quality good enough for international consumers and advertisers to pay extra $$ (over that for a cheaper SDR production)? in order for a production company to pursue this next gen tech? The result? A very good impression ![]() ![]() Although the pictorial illustration above is poor, with on site viewing as I said, people were very impressed by 4K HDR. Bottom line is that a production company isn’t about to fake an experiment with tomfoolery when by doing so with enough time in the end it turned out the emperor had no clothes; for ultimately they would be cutting their own throats by needlessly investing in VERY expensive production equipment (like, for instance, the lenses for those 4K HDR cameras). |

Small note for the people expecting slipcovers for the Lionsgate line-up. As I suspected, the artwork Amazon has up for them is simply the insert without the case of the mockup. Here's the Amazon artwork compared to the original mockup.
![]() Thought it would be worth noting since I've heard people refer to the Lionsgate wave having slipcovers. |
