So, can we all stop whining now when a movie under 2 hours is on a 66G disc? All of the reference PQ movies are all on BD-66 discs. It's actually quite amazing if you think about it.

They would look even better if all 4k releases used maximum allowable bitrate. All 4k releases that are longer than say 60 minutes should AUTOMATICALLY be a BD-100.

And can someone explain how this movie could fit on a BD-66? If a typical 2 hour movie has 24 unique frames a second and is roughly 60gb, shouldn't a 2 hour film with 60 unique frames (Billy Lynn) require roughly 150gb?

You don't store a complete copy of all the pixels in every frame, rather the differences between frames.

What having 60fps does is actually make this compression process MORE efficient because the adjacent frames are even more similar to each other than those in a 24fps stream, so while it will definitely need some extra overhead it's nothing like 2.5x the data AFAIK. Billy Lynn's will be fine on a 100GB disc.
And just to add: it seems to be fine on a 66GB, never mind 100GB! But then the look of the film also plays into the efficiency of the encoding, as without a lot of grain/noise then interframe compression has even less hard work to do. Banding can result if the source is not properly dithered (for which grain/noise acts as a natural substitute) but in Sony I trust.

So stoked to see this, and not just because of the sharpness etc but dat HFR too. Cannot wait.

Ah okay. Thanks for the answers. I still would like to see all 4k releases use the highest possible bit rate though...

And I wonder how much extra space Dolby Vision will use up on each 4k disc. I know it's not going to happen now, but I think the format should have been two 4k discs for each movie - a 4k disc with SDR, and a 4k disc with HDR. Will anyone try that? I wonder if Nolan will do that for Dunkirk?

Dolby will broadly require an extra 25% because the enhancement layer is a quarter of the resolution (1920x1080) of the main feature (3840x2160), so given that most 2-hour shows fit nicely onto a 66GB then a 100GB disc should be fine for handling the DV discs.

I'm also very interested in seeing how Nolan handles Dunkirk on UHD, yep.

I think we all pretty much know what we're getting with this disc. Spectacular PQ with HFR technology, but an abortion of a movie.

The SOE like effect is heavy. Which I prefer. The opening of scene has the officers in uniforms outside, the blue and red on the uniforms jump right off the screen, as do the shiny buttons on the jackets of the uniforms. I'd say "hyper real" is a correct term.

It's amazing how Sony have seemingly already mastered the UHD BD compression algorithm. I've been able to see more UHD macroblocking in many UHDs on the OLED from every other studio except for Sony releases, it boggles how they got the compression for Spidey 2 looking so good on a 66gb'er.

Pretty good view from here. Though the camera is over saturating the colors. Just an idea of the scenery with Billy Lynn. Super clean, demo style.

Btw, the 1080p blu-ray looks great too, reference 1080p which imo looks better than quite a few 4k discs. (The crappy 2k upscales)

I'd comment on how pretty pictures don't make a movie but I can't think of a way to phrase it that doesn't make me look like a pretentious ass.

Oh... crap.

Well we know what the movie is. But most of the posters here are here because they are intrigued with the hype of the PQ of the movie. Maybe there's a 1080p thread of the movie you can go hang out in Intead of bashing those interested in what the 4k version offers?

I'm going to be buying it tomorrow for sure, but if no one wants to pay full price on this, I may sell it for less if my opinion of the movie sways towards par for the course.

I'll be selling the 3D for sure.
