You got it all backwards. Movies have been looking the way we do for technological and financial reasons, not because a group of directors sat and went "Oh wow 24fps sure makes movies look like they should"

Those technical limitations could have been overcome decades ago, yet we only have three modern movies made not in 24fps. It's not like they can't do it, it's that they don't want to, and for multiple reasons. For a lot of artists it's because it looks like film. For some bean counters it's because it helps cover cheaper effects maybe, sure, but I don't think that's the dominant reason.

Do you think 99% of film-writers shit all over HFR for funsies? For the hell of it? They have no financial stake, they just didn't like it, for the same reasons I don't. Billy Lynn was a box office bomb so obviously the market doesn't care. You and some other tech enthusiasts care, and that's great, but it doesn't change the world.

Maybe James Cameron will make audiences care and we can debate it again then, but for now it is what it is.

I think you guys are venturing a little too far into the philosophy of film itself. Jean Baudrillard would feel quite at home in this thread.

I think we know where everyone stands on the issue of HFR. And likely never the twain shall meet. Maybe time to move on?

This is an early-adopter new tech format section of a home theater website though. There's tons of people in this section just as interested in the tech as they are the movie, or even more so. It's not surprising there are HFR enthusiasts in here, and that's fine, but I'm just trying to frame the discussion of its future with the fact that most movie enthusiasts dislike it, and I doubt it gets much more attention. Unless Cameron makes it happen with his miracle hands.
Movie enthusiasts like what they're told to like because they always, without any exceptions whatsoever, like to appeal to authority. If 60fps all of a sudden becomes apart of every director's artistic intent, movie enthusiasts will eat it up after a couple of years of getting used to it.

Proof: this is exactly what happened with 24p.

Would 20p make it look even more like a movie? Why or why not?

If everything associated with 24fps leads to a more movie-like experience, that means that we must first establish a set parameter of what makes a movie look like a movie.
Where are these set parameters? Oh there are none, as 24fps was more a choice of convenience and practicality...And the fact that it helps studios save a few bucks surely does not hurt either

In a way I think Ang Lee was a good choice for this sort of movie. He makes beautiful looking films rather than good ones. I include Crouching Dtagon in that. His films entertain me but I always feel he has ran out of ideas. Almost like he compensates with technical shots and techniques rather than concentrating on making a clsssic. Broke back Mountain some would argue was the exception, maybe that will go down in history as his classic.

Got the disc today and sampled it a bit. I haven't yet upgraded to a UHD tv, but my Xbox One S still plays the discs without a hitch, and this one did still display in its native 60FPS, and I am absolutely blown away by how good this looks. I really wish more filmmakers used this technology, because when utilized well, the level of immersion this provides is just unrivaled. Amazing stuff! Will watch the film with the lady this weekend.

On a UHD TV that does 60 FPS, it truly is a new experience.

Note that in TV we have had more than 10 years where some things, mostly sports, have been experienced at true 60P although a lower resolution.

And for some others, it is not 100 years of 24fps. It was only in the late 20's, when audio started to be introduced, thet 24 fps started to become standard.
