I felt the same way. Humor felt forced too often. Even Thor losing an eye was taken very lightly, too lightly IMO. There is a time and place for humor.

It's definitely bottom-tier for me too. Even for a Marvel movie it feels too CG'd and cartoonish, and the story is pretty basic. I also laugh at the concept of a futuristic society that is ruled by arena combat victor monarchy. We talked about that on here before but holy shit I still chuckle thinking of it.

Middle-tier for me. It has my favorite MCU villian aside from Thanos, the protagonists are well written, actually it has one of the best scripts in the MCU, and performances are great all around, but I didn't like the pacing, the VFX is easily the worst in the MCU, and the cinematography can get a little too dark for my tastes.

Ha ha good point.

Definitely way too much CG work in this when they could have actually gone on location. Very lazy. Same problem with Legend of Tarzan which also couldn't be bothered to shoot in Africa. When they're in a big field at the end of Black Panther it still looks like it was all shot in a green screen studio.

I don't like Homecoming that much, but I liked it better than the previous Sony movies.

Also, funny Thor is the best Thor IMO. Moody Thor from the second one is boring. First Thor is alright.

I like that the last MCU films all have a different vibe from each other, which also means everyone will perceive them differently according to their tastes. That's why some think Ragnarok is great (like me) and some don't like it all. Same thing with BP.

I mean, the whole movie is about a kingdom struggling with the balance between tradition and modernity. Those combat scenes are an obvious example of something stuck in the past, that T'Challa learns the hard way probably needs to go. (And now that there's no more
[Show spoiler]magic purple flower
, it probably has.)

except for the bad green screen CGI, picture quality was nice. Movie was ok, but not something you watch to have a good time, more something you watch when bored and dont have anything else to do.

It drives me so crazy. Both those movies should be showcases for Africa and instead they were filmed in some warehouse. I don't know if it's budget or laziness, but either way I hate it.

It can't be budget as a lot of tv is shot in South Africa now because it's so dirt cheap.

I just cut a crime series and all the drama was shot in South Africa because it's even cheaper than Canada now.

I don't want to make an ass of myself assuming, but I really feel like they just don't want to go on location anymore or spend significant time abroad away from the comforts of the West. "Why go to Africa when ILM can do everything?" It depresses me.

Rome was a very advanced society and they had arena mortal games too. Nothing new under the sun.

Movies lose a lot when they are overly CGed. Hope there will come a day when CG will become too cliché even for hollywood and avoided by most directors

That is why I have always admired the location choices of TV shows like Lost and Walking Dead

Disney have done EXACTLY what they did with Guardians 2 on UHD, they've pulled down the black levels considerably and it crushes the shadows to shit. Right from the opening scene in the Oakland apartment it just looked wrong, with blacks that pervade the image and consume everything around them and make the bright spots stand out far too much on a backlit LCD display (all the power windows on people's faces are horribly obvious) and it leaves behind the exact same rusty tint that I saw on JPs 2 and 3. I can imagine this looking better on an OLED because this grade doesn't do a subtle gradation from light to dark, it just nukes anything that's even close to black and without the backlighting artefacts it will look tidier for sure. But as it is, on my ZD9, this is a crushing disappointment for me.

Popping in the Blu to compare it shows an SDR grade that already has beautifully deep darks but which doesn't crush anything like as badly what this HDR grade does, instantly the apartment scene look so much better balanced with a far more natural roll off into black, and the less said about the forest ambush in HDR the better. The problem is that the HDR is pulling down a black level that is ALREADY reaching absolute black throughout the movie and so it can only crush what's there even further. I was SO looking forward to this but...ugh.

When Infinity War comes out then I don't care what ratio the UHD is in or whether the sound has been Atmoused, if they pull this shit again with the black levels then I'm out.
I was beginning to question my sanity whenever I popped the disc in this evening (I hadn’t seen the film yet) and noticed all the awful crush and posterisation. Watching in DV on an LG55B7 OLED and a Sony UBP X-700 UHD player, both of which are less than a week old.

I hadn’t seen any mention of it in the reviews, so it was a bit of a shock when the second UHD I ever watched was full of blocky gradients, especially on most of the characters’ hair. I noticed pretty much everything you brought up here and in subsequent comments.

I tried playing around with all the settings on my player and TV, turned brightness up but it didn’t alleviate any of the posterised shadows, turned it down to get a smoother gradient but the blacks were just dramatically crushed even more. So much detail lost compared to the caps on this site and the blu-ray itself on my same set-up.

I had to deal with plenty of banding on my previous TV due to its dreadful viewing angle, so it was certainly disappointing seeing this type of video fault rear its ugly head on a much upgraded setup, but fortunately this seems to be baked into the disc rather than a problem with several thousand pounds worth of equipment.

Noticed it most at about 00:54:59 when Everett Ross is out of focus in the “foreground” of the shot... there’s just a big black blob on the back of his clothes, with several other black blobs in that same scene.

The other scene where Forest Whitaker’s character is in the dark at around 01:01:34 there were these huge blobs in the background, they’re still there in the blu-ray (as I saw on this site)https://www.blu-ray.com/movies/scree...323&position=7 , but nowhere near as big.

The scene where the Oakland apartment is returned to when killmonger is buried in the sand was also packed full of beautiful, blocky transitions to black. It’s as if any near-black tones were completely absent from the colour palette.

My enjoyment was also hindered by what appeared to be an issue with how my player handled the metadata for Dolby vision, where any time there was a cut to a different shot there was this jarring spike in brightness which felt like a flicker. Turning it on and off seemed to do the trick.

At least I can have peace of mind knowing my new TV ain’t broken.

I had this issue when I watched the first two Mission Impossible films (also DV, also on an OLED b7). It was like a bright flash anytime it would cut but it would only happen bout an hour into the film. Instead of running the hdmi output through the receiver, I used the dual hdmi outputs on the player (video to the TV, audio to the receiver) and it went away. Not sure whats going on since my receiver is supposed to support dolby vision but that fixed it for me.

I'm gonna have to use my region-free player to do some direct back-and-forth comparisons, as I noticed none of this. Granted we do all have our different sensitivities and notice different things more easily, and I know for Geoff black quality is up there (for me it's compression blocks and aliasing). Still, when I popped in the blu-ray and watched the opening jungle fight I was amazed at how blown-out to shit it was, over-brightening the image and revealing digital noise out the ying-yang. To me the UHD is a drastic improvement.

It's so odd to have such polar opposite reactions. I definitely want to compare them more directly.

I'm "amazed" how blown out most of your settings are that you see "blown out [to] shit" that isn't normally there when your brightness and contrast are set correctly instead of set to AUTO-SUNLIGHT that these TVs come preset to in order to sell sets at Best Buy.

Black Panther 3D looked perfectly fine on my projector. No visible noise. No "blown out shit". It's your TV and/or its settings. Period.

Yeah, we just watched this again(4K version) a few nights ago and honestly, everything looked pretty good to me regarding black levels. The early jungle scenes I suppose could have exhibited a little crush but overall on my OLED I found the blacks to be quite pleasing. I’d like to think I have my set dialed in well for blacks with some service menu tweaks and luminance adjustments which have helped a lot.

Each TV and setup is quite different though. It’s hard to compare the disk with some many variables in people’s setups.

The sound is what needs help on this realease, lol. Need to crank up the volume!
