Many of the scenes that suffer the most from the poor black levels are already very dark. I was trying to turn down the brightness on my display to eliminate all the funky black crush artifacts, but then I could barely see anything!

The Blu-ray looks much more balanced during these darker scenes.

Here's a quick comparison of the Okoye shot that I took with my phone. Not really accurate with regards to brightness, contrast, saturation, but gets the black crush across.

Yeah there may be some crush, but in-motion it's never bothered me. The other benefits of the UHD far outweigh any crush that might be there.

I watched this movie once.... That was more than enough. It was filler in the marvel universe . Worse than even thor ragnarok. I think the movie deserves a razzy.

It doesn't deserve razzies or oscars.

iTunes just updated the cover art, along with Guardians 2, Thor Ragnarok, Infinity War, and Ant Man & The Wasp. How likely are 4K re-releases with these artworks? Would be an pain to rebuy them but the consistent covers would be nice, they match the catalog 4Ks coming out.

For ITunes? Unlikely. They are MA 4K so you can watch via Vudu.

Now it's all about politics, and Hollywood's virtue signalling is stronger than ever. Honestly? Yeah, rightly so, but on the other hand there's a difference between movie's importance and success, and how good it is. Of course it's all subjective, but to me Black Panther is a mediocre, reductive (Lion King did that story better, sorry) film with bad action scenes and even worse CGI. There's nothing exceptional about it from the cinematic point of view, not a single memorable idea, scene or dialogue. Nothing. If it's one of the best movies of the year as the nomination suggests, why no nomination for the screenplay and direction?

Logan deserved to be nominated for Best Picture because it's indeed a great MOVIE and that's what should be celebrated, not box office or skin color of the cast.

One of the things that made it stand out from the rest was that BP was about a country that was untouched by western colonialism. No one was abducted for slavery, it had zero influence from the outside from the global corporate world. Wakanda was a country that grew on it's own without any influences from the outside world. Part of the reason they isolated themselves was because of what was happening on their own continent.

The result of that decision is what led up to the events with Killmonger. The king's brother saw what was happening to his own people in Oakland which was rife with gang violence and police brutality. He was killed and his son was left behind to live in that all the while knowing that he had a country and a family that abandoned him. He lived in the very environment that had been subjugating and oppressing his people for centuries all the while knowing that he came from a land untouched by that.

It's no wonder that he sought to fight for his place there through any means necessary. He only knew one world. When he finally arrives at Wakanda, he's still rejected and scorned. Everyone wants to deny who he is and his place there. They want to remain in the dark and isolated from the truth much like Wakanda did in it's early days. The duality of this can't be missed, IMO.

In the end, when Killmonger is dying and T'Challa is sitting with him, both came to understand their place. T'Challa sees that along with the death of his cousin, Wakanda can no longer be an isolated country. That had to die as well.

I don't get why this is dismissed so easily. The layers of subtext, the duality of the stories, the character arcs and how well it was seamed together makes this a good movie.

People need to stop acting like this is an apology movie to black people.
I agree with both of you....somehow. I enjoyed BP and just ignored the color of the people in it. It was a decent film. I bought the 4K used and find it a fun watch but nothing more.

Ultimately, it does suck that we are in this stage where everything is political even if it really isnt. Its a damned if you do, damned if you dont type of thing: If movies with black leads or female leads these days get nominated for anything the one side argues that "they only got nominated because the film has blacks or females in it". If said films dont get nominated then the other side of the aisle claims "racist hollywood didnt nominate xxxx movie because its got black people or females in it". Its like.... what the !@#$ do you do?

If things really worked correctly.... films would be taken SOLELY on merit regardless of what color or gender anyone involved with it was or is. Good/great movies would win oscars and mediocre/bad movies would NOT win. Period. Feels like we'll never get back to that. What a mess.

100% agree with this.

Black Panther is by far my least favorite MCU movie. And it has nothing to do with politics or anything. It’s just not that good. In fact, it’s the only one of the series that I haven’t felt compelled to watch again at home lol except when I was at a friend’s house and he had it on. I’m doing a rewatch of all the MCU movies before Captain Marvel, so maybe I’ll appreciate it more when I watch it again.

They will come eventually. Marvel is releasing all the MCU films on 4K using that line of artwork. I can only imagine they will take GOTG V2, Infinity War, Black Panther and Ant Man and the Wasp and just make the original art OOP and begin printing the new art and slips like nothing happened.

Best Picture doesn't just recognise the best film in terms of quality, it also recognises the best film in terms of cultural importance and/or that pushes the art form forwards significantly. Black Panther didn't get nominated because "black people", it got nominated because it's a culturally significant film. It's not because it's politically motivated, but it's the Academy recognising that Black Panther was a culturally important film. It's not political, it's just them saying "we recognise that this film had a huge impact culturally and for many people was a significant step forward".

I mean, I agree with you, but it's culturally important for reasons that are very much political in a lot of ways, to a lot of people.

It's only political because 90% of black voters vote for one party. That's not the fault of black Americans.

I’m watching this for the first time on 4K with surround sound and everything and, man, you guys weren’t kidding about the weak audio on this lol.

On most other similar movies, I’ve had my volume in the high 40s to the mid 50s and I feel like that’s a bit much sometimes lol but this disc I’ve got it cranked up to 70 and it’s definitely not way too loud.

Looks great though.

No, the theatrical release did. Just because they screwed it up at home, doesn’t mean it wasn’t great before they did.

Heard it sounded similar in the theatre.

The issues with too low or weak sounds are absolutely a home issue, if the volume was so low that people had a problem hearing it, there would have been tons of complaints about it (look at the widespread reports of people having trouble understanding Interstellar’s dialogue in the theater got, and Black Panther is an even higher profile film).

The sound effects were very solid in the theater, now as far as Disney underusing immersive sound effects in high end formats, I can’t say as I saw this in a theater which I’m pretty sure uses 5.1 audio, but I did see Infinity War and Ant-Man and the Wasp in IMAX 12 channel as the former delivered pretty well on immersive sound while the latter was lacking.
