I agree. This thread has become bloated, smelly roadkill.

I'm staring at a 52 display at 8 ft distance. I have to disagree, nothing upconverted is "very nearly" on Blu-ray level. In fact watching upconverted DVD is unbearable to me.

I haven't been that impress with the upconversion of the 3 movies actualy. That being said I am not worried fro the BD release, after seeing what Peter Jackson did with King Kong, I think we can expect a wonderful release.

The TE's are fantastic films and still nice and long. It's not like you are missing key plot points. Sure, we get to see the death of Saruman, and Frodo catching some Shire salt and the Mouth of Sauron, but these are all extensions of an already fantastic story.
Well, they explain how Frodo suddenly divined out of thin air Gollum's original name. Going from Theatrical Edition FOTR to Theatrical Edition TTT, Frodo comes off like some kind of psychic..."Isn't that right...Smeagol?" "What? What did you call me?" "That was your name."

The Extended Editions fix the following problems:

No resolution for Saruman/Wormtongue...I guess we're to believe Saruman stays locked in his tower for Eternity and doesn't know the Escape-O-Tower phone number 1-800-FLY-EAGLE. Extended Edition wraps up both Wormtongue and Saruman's story arcs, and directs all focus to Sauron.

Too much focus on Gondor, not enough on Frodo and Sam in ROTK...One of the most baffling decisions in ROTK (theatrical) was the focus on the siege of Gondor, while the Frodo/Sam journey suffered severe cuts. Some of the greatest scenes in the book were never even filmed (Sam's temptation by the Ring outside the gates of Cirith Ungol, Sam defeating the Watchers, Frodo violently demanding the ring once he learns Sam has it). The theatrical goes on to dramatically shorten the journey from Cirith Ungol to Mt. Doom, while the Extended Edition makes some amends by extending the Cirith Ungol scenes and including the adventures Sam and Frodo have on the way to Mt. Doom.

Denethor's a Dick...Denethor was a noble man driven mad by despair. In the theatrical cut, he's just a dick, there is no justification for his madness. In the book, of course, he was staring into a Palantir and saw what Sauron wanted him to see and consequently became insane with hopelessness. In the extended edition, we're given yet another version of Denethor, a proud father so in love with his son, Boromir, he is driven mad with grief, even to the point of sending his own son to certain doom. Both theatrical and extended versions are problematic where Denethor is concerned, but at least there is some shred of psychological realism in the Extended Edition (of course, the extended edition creates a spatial problem for Denethor's Pyre, setting it off from the citadel by a good quarter mile or so, meaning Flame-On-Denethor ran from the side of the mountain, through the courtyard, and off the citadel to his death...this is often comically referred to as "Denethor's Flaming Mile" among Ring fans. It's not in the book, it was sensationalism on the part of Jackson, Boyens and Walsh, and it makes no sense.

Concerning Hobbits -- the theatrical edition of Return of the King takes us back to the Shire via a close up of a map. This is intended to bookend the same shot of the same map from the beginning of the Extended Edition. Well, those shots aren't in the theatrical edition of FOTR, so you lose that sense of A-B closure. Yeah, small thing.

Aragorn -- Many details concerning Aragorn's backstory are revealed in both the Extended Editions of FOTR and TTT, leading to his embrace of his birthright in ROTK. These are cut in the theatrical versions. I can only assume this is why Viggo Mortensen himself said that he doesn't consider the theatrical editions "true versions" of the films. If Viggo himself dismisses the theatrical cuts, what better endorsement do you need for the Extended?

Thankfully someone agrees with me on the upconversion of LOTR. You do make a good point about the quality of King Kong. If LOTR looks the same I will be way beyond happy.

Excellent summary, and I couldn't agree more. I'm really torn about whether or not to buy the TEs when they come out. Though not BD quality, the upconverted DVDs look pretty damn good on my set, and I don't think I could stand watching the incomplete TEs after so many years of the EEs.

I'll wait.

I managed to grab all three extended movies on my pvr when they were aired in HD, and threw them on my external H/D. They look amazing compared to my SD DVD set. I'll stream them through my ps3 until the EE's get released on blu-ray.

The EE are more detailed and give better flow to the story, especialy if you have read the book. Also, they are simply longer and I will take all of Middle Earth I can get since I wish these were even longer (Tom Bombadil anyone?). I just get so sucked into this world that time just flys........

Why are we sheep because we prefer the TE's? Some of us may not double dip at all, so your point about studio milking is moot. I suppose if you were in charge you'd already have both versions out in one box set, with all the supplements/bells/whistles, and it would only be $29.99. Uh huh, right.
Both versions of the movies are really good, but nothing beats the books. If i wanna go total geek, then i'll just read the books for the 4th time.
The only person's opinion on the movies that i would like to hear, is Tolkiens, and he's dead, so..............

To many fans of the books Tom Bombadil is a very intresting character there are lots of theories about who/what he is. He is said to be very powerful and old, older than Gandalf or Sauron

am i the only one that saw this??:

http://www.worstpreviews.com/headlin...=13048&count=0

i didn't want to wade through all of the "i'll wait for the extended cuts" and "i'm not double dipping on these again" posts to check any mention of it.

my 2 cents again, i'll get the theatrical cuts when they come out, sell off my standard dvd copies, and keep my dvd copies of the Extended Editions which i pretty much only bought for all of the extras.
