They are not doing the EEs yet. While you are feeling sorry for those of us who purchase the theatricals, we will be glad to tell you how good the PQ and AQ is, so you can look forward to how good the EEs will be.

Yes, because it gives me a chance to watch LOTR on BD in the meantime (sorry - impatient, don't want to wait two years), and there are special features with the TE that are not present with the EE. Over $300 million and five years were invested in the production of LOTR (one of my three favorite movies), so I don't mind throwing them an additional $60 bone.

I have plenty of love for the TEs, the ones I saw in the cinema in the first place. I mean there may be a consensus, but are the EEs really always so much better than the TEs? Maybe book purists care about some extra things added, but as far as I can recall (it's been a while since I've watched, to be fair) ROTK is the only one that really needs the EE in terms of having cuts which are pretty important to the story. The TE of ROTK is also so long anyway, that you may as well go all out and watch the complete thing which ties up more of the loose endings. FOTR I particularly think is perfect in its TE version. I mean if everyone thinks it really is that much better, I understand the frustration (plus the money-fleecing aspect), but sometimes it seems people just think more=better which isn't necessarily true.
I haven't seen LOTR in ages and will be getting the TEs because I want to watch them again, and haven't seen the EEs enough for that to be the 'definitive' version of the film. Because it's a bit of an 'event' when I do watch them, it'll be alright to wait until the EEs are released and watching them again then. The gap between the releases is a bit cheeky though, I think it might come out on BD before The Hobbit just because that's SO far away, but of course it would make sense to wait until The Hobbit, so I dunno. I do think its a real shame they aren't released at the same time, in the same box set. The capacity of BD means that surely the technology is there to include both cuts on one (or maybe two) discs and for you to have the option to watch one or the other. BD means that the either/or original DVD release of LOTR is being carried over, when I'd rather they took advantage of the new technology, and the fact that both cuts are completed, to release them both in one boxset. ![]() I've never seen the EE's and don't feel a need to. That being said, I'll buy the LOTRs trilogy when it's around $45, MAYBE $50. It's hard for me to pay more than $15/movie for a catalog title, but a catalog title this huge, I *MIGHT* be willing to pay a little extra. |

The theatrical editions are great films. I love the extended cuts too, and in fact I prefer the extended cut of Fellowship. But in general the theatrical cuts of Two Towers and Return of the King are better-paced than the extended editions. Especially if one is to watch all 3 within 24-48 hours of each other; there are sooo many battles. And too, there's only so many times I need to see Sam cry or Gollum protest his innocence in Return of the King. |

Which is why they should have taken care of this with a branching option. It's in the Blu-Ray spec.

I'll probably give in and buy the theatrical versions, because once I start hearing (I assume) about how great the PQ and AQ are I won't be able to resist. And I won't necessarily feel like I'm wasting my money, since I wouldn't mind having the theatrical AND EEs, UNLESS the EE versions, when they are released, include BOTH versions. Then I'll be pissed!

I'll buy the theatrical editions with ease. I LOATHE the extended cuts for 1 and 3. 2 was the only one that really benefited from the extended cut. people need to stop whining really. Basically the only people that are worried about this is people on the internet forums. Everyone else I talk to who has a blu player all say the same thing when I say they aren't the extended cuts. "so what??" or " the extended cuts are waaaaaaaaay too long anyways"
and Seamless branching is NOT a good idea for these flicks. The way the movies were recut they would need to be re-scored etc.. they tried this with the flipper discs that had both cuts on them on DVD, the sound was badly botched because of the insertion or scenes with audio that was re-cycled or didn't match well. |
