The quality variables are mostly in the creation of the original mix though, not in bringing it to home video. I don't know when digital recording and mastering became standard practice in the film industry but digital audio in general has undergone no significant revolutions since the 80s... just get the original tracks, feed them into the DTS-HD decoder, and voila, reference quality sound

Radagast, you know they would simply fine something else to complain about...like "The Official I Think The "Extras" Are Lame And I"ll Start Complaining Now About The EE's Thread" or something like that....it will never really go away.

Let's talk about something happier, like a possible manufacturer's coupon for this set to drop it to about $40 week of release.

Have never seen WB do one of these, but I'd be thrilled if they did a coupon like Disney does - put in your UPC code from your DVDs & print a coupon.

Wouldn't that be nice! It wouldn't surprise me to see movement in that direction, since the release is coming up and ALOT of these are going to be sold. $50 was my buy-in point, so I had to bite on the offer that WB put out last week.

It don't matter how much people will complain that it aren't the EE's and that they're not going to double dip! I absolutely love the EE's and as a matter of fact I haven't seen the Theatrical Editions since I've seen them at the Cinema so I'm looking forward to seeing them once again (and in HD for the first time!) I'm pretty sure in two year's time I'll be ready to spend out some money again and bend over for the EE's!

I simply don't have the discipline to wait for X-Mas 2012 to have some LOTR in HD!

Did you get it before WB stopped offering it? And they didn't cancel your order?

Yea they had a coupon stacking available for like two days that brought it down from $62 to $50.75 on WBShop with automatic free shipping (standard, not express).

Great offer....assuming they honor it

That's funny, I thought people HATED noise-reduction.
Besides, that shot looks quite like it should be, except a little jagged here and there or whatever that is.
That shot does not look at all as it should. It looks neither like untampered film nor does it look like a high quality degrained shot. It looks like poor application of the wrong tool leaving a plethora of artifacts behind. It looks outright nasty with all the random artifacts splashed over the picture.
And no, there is not supposed to be noise reduction, But if any is done it should be done competently with proper tools, not the hack job visible on this shot.

After looknig at all of the shots, they look fine to me. I see no major problems. These were filmed in Super35, so that more than likely explains some of these non-issues people are having with these compressed screenshots NOT coming from the official Blu-Ray.

Super35 isn't the limiting factor here by ANY stretch, I would guess most of your reference discs are super35. But film is analog, and it won't scan itself, and I guess WB won't do it either.

The screencaps that are being reviewed are from the REAL BLURAY, not some torrent.
