Ken, thanks for chiming in here. Yesterday and the day before it got out of hand on this thread, and your explanation really helps. I'm still planning on buying this set - I simply cannot watch the DVD's any longer (last time was 1 year ago - or 2). I love these movies and I only have a 42 inch screen - so I may be fine (I saw problems with Gladiator - but I was able to enjoy it on blu).

Thanks for adding to this thread.

That would've been the best worst movie of all time.

If so, just rent and see if the quality is good enough for you to make the purchase. If not, you'll have gotten your fix for a while and might be able to hold out for the EE's and a possible, though not guaranteed, better transfer.
Renting? LOTR? After this thread and the one at AVS it will be a 6m wait on NetFlix before you land all 3 movies (in the correct order). Look at how many have changed their minds and will now netflix them.

I called Blockbuster and it seems (the one near me) that they will have them for sale, but none to rent (at least as of Fri.).

Netflix is great but last year I waited like 4 months for the Matrix and finally just bought it on ebay.

Somehow, I don't think that version of the movie would have received the same treatment and care as was given by Jackson.

Actually warners Blade Runner looks stunning on Bluray and Terminator salvation is also a stunner they have done many great transfers
As I said before, Warner can produce some phenomenal transfers when they set their mind to it. The restorations of Casablanca, Gone with the Wind, The Matrix, North By Northwest, Blade Runner, The Wizard of Oz, 2001: A Space Odyssey, The Shining, Unforgiven, Heat, The Shawshank Redemption, Batman, and several others have all looked fantastic. Their new releases also generally look great.

Bestbuy.com has lowered the price, only by a $1, but it's now $62.99. FYI for those who are still buying and who have pre-ordered with the steelbook.

WB's insistance that actual screengrabs be deleted and its refusal to address the numerous shortcomings in its failed video encode screams outright COWARDICE... this is why Warner sucks, people.

I saw all six of the LOTR and SW films in theatre and while I do not have photographic memory they all looked great.

True the VFX stuff spanned several years and had to gone through many hardware & software changes. The CG chracters in LOTR looked a lot better in the final movie.

They also shot pick ups up until 2003, not everything was filmed in late 99/2000.

They even filmed one short part for the EE of RotK (something to do with the Path of the Dead I think) AFTER it won at the Oscars

Warner isn't keen on websites using their own screenshots, and has instructed us to replace them with a pre-approved series of studio images. As you can see though, the images they have provided are not 1080p screenshots. For now, we've loaded these images as an interim solution until we're able to resolve the issue.

I'd like to apologize for any inconvenience this causes any of you. Rest assured, we're in contact with representatives from the studio, and we're hoping to have the situation resolved soon. Thanks as always for your patience and your posts.

Out of sheer curiosity, have they instructed you take take down screencaps on all Warner titles or just on the Lord of the Rings trilogy specifically?
