I’ve made some inquiries to see if I can get you a decent guestimate… I wrote Peter about this and the response I got basically said that the NEW LINE DVD team that he had a fabulous relationship is no longer the team handling the title. Instead TIME WARNER’s huge team is and he is not included in any of the decision making processes with the title. And if that scares the shit out of you, it scares the shit out of me. WARNERS – you had better get your shit together and get REAL FRIENDLY with the fans. You’re going to be counting on them very soon – and this release is no way to kick start that.

He was commenting about the extended editions, but it goes to show how Peter Jackson is no longer involved with the trilogy's home video release, at least since Warner took over.

It is not a discrete 6 channel codec. It is 5 channels, with the 2 back channels reproducted into a 6th. So, the info sent to the rear channel in the back is the combination of the side surrounds. Either way, I hear the DTS-HD is awesome, and this alone is what makes me happy.

Well, I just found out I am missing out on all 3 movies from Netflix and now they are all "Very Long Wait," so I guess I will just take the plunge and just hope that FOTR isn't terrible. At least I have a Best Buy RZ certificate to soften the blow.

I have been waiting way to long for this to come on blu. I can deal with the somewhat lowered pq stuff, however I am stoked that everyone is saying that the aq is superb. I cannot wait to pick this up and enjoy it on my def tech setup. MY EARS WILL BLEED

i just can't get a straight answer about the PQ to justify 60$ half the people i ask say no, a quarter of the other half say stick with the dvd and up converter and the other quarter say the PQ is way better then the DVD, obviously the PQ isn't mind blowingly 5/5 awesome like everyone wanted but if it is significantly better then the DVD that is good enough for me

It's too bad we are in a recession. In better times Warner might be more likely to spend teh big bucks to make this perfect.

Can someone that has the Blu Ray post pics of the packaging? It looks like there are 2 single sized Blu Ray cases & I am curious how they fit 9 disc inside (I hope they didn't stack discs on top of each other).

If you had taken an add from Best Buy or Fry's with a lower price, Wal-mart would have matched it.

By the way: I like that the box is sturdy. Not flimsy by any means. I like less that the 3 digital copies are all in 1 BD case, while the 3 films and 3 bonus discs are in another. I would have much rather had 1 case per movie with its accompanying bonus disc and digital copy. Minor gripe.

I see they keep dropping the price. And that's nice. But I will still wait until the extended versions are available before I spend more money on LOTR.

The sountrack is a 6.1 matrix,which is in fact a 5.1 track,they say it's 6.1 so it appears to have an advantage over a Dolby Digital 5.1 EX track,when they are both in effect the same,as the extra rear effect channel is created using the two rear channels.

The confusion comes when DTS label both their ES codecs as 6.1,the discrete is in fact 6.1,when the matrix is only 5.1,you can see where people get confused as they are labeled "DTS ES 6.1 Matrix" and "DTS ES 6.1 Discrete",as if both tracks were 6.1 there would be no reason in having two types.

On the LOTR my reciever shows a 5.1 speaker set up is in use,although i use the THX Ultra 7.1 setting on all 5.1 tracks.

P.s. The Blu-ray.com review lists the audio track as DTS Master audio 5.1 ES matrix.

Kind of frustrating because Star Wars takes YEARS, but after it comes out, a new edition of the trilogies comes out every year it seems. It's just people like us who can't wait for the ultimate set have to "suffer" because it's not reference-like, mind-blowing quality.

Just checked the "Fellowship" for that white and purple line,on the left hand side of the screen,i could not see it,even when i paused the image.

One small complaint the movie has no time bar i like these,i had to use my players onscreen display to get to the parts in question,and to confirm the soundtrack it's a 5.1 matrix.

I just picked up the Steelcase version at Futurehop and the packaging is very nice... In fact, I only got it because of the Steelcase. I wanted to wait for the extended version but I cracked under pressure.

Picked mine up a little while ago. I like that they provided regular cases for it but would have preferred one for each movie (instead of just two cases for everything). Can't wait to check it out though.
