I reckon if you've read the book its a no-brainer - EEs are for that crowd. But if you prefer a thinner slice of middle earth action, you may find the theatricals more pleasing.
I have never read the book, anything more of LOTR is welcome :P (extra 40m )
thanks again

How would you know if you've never seen the EE?

to be honest, i have never seen the extended version, so i wanted to ask if it is really THAT better than the theatrical version.
thanks you.

IMO, yes the EE is superior. If you got sucked into these films, chances are you will prefer the EE version, but obviously you wont know for sure until you check it out.

Does the EE add anything that the theatrical edition missed? what I mean is it really that much more to the viewer get from watching the EE version? Does the theatrical version miss plot points that EE has?

I've never seen the EE as the regular versions are a bit long. I'd like to check the EE version if I am really missing a huge deal here, if not then I'll leave that to the true fans.

Although I would prefer having the extended cuts, the $69.99 price tag is not too bad considering you get the entire trilogy. I might pick this up and the EE's whenever they will be released.

I know you guys really want to see the EE but honestly, you will wait 3 more years with nothing in the mean time? Double dipping I understand, but nothing at all??? IT'S 3 YEARS!!!

...and yes that is quite some time for a movie

Just FYI -- Peter Jackson apparently wants to split The Hobbit into 2 separate films. If they want to double-dip with the release of The Hobbit on DVD/BD, I can imagine that would push back the release of the Extended Editions quite a bit also.

I will probably just pick up the Theatrical cuts.

What do you mean, nothing? You think there aren't any other movies in the universe other than the LOTR? Like there's going to be some three-year drought of releases? Trust me, we'll be fine with what comes out...Lawrence of Arabia, Seven Samurai, Fantasia, Jaws, Wizard of Oz, Citizen Kane, My Fair Lady, Doctor Zhivago, Ben Hur, 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea, Alien, Dances With Wolves, Raiders of the Lost Ark, The Graduate, etc.

Much of the material in the EEs is terrible. Extra Gimli comic relief, HORRIBLE extra stuff on ROTK's Paths of the Dead sequence, the terrible Entdraught sceen in TTT, awkward editing everywhere. Much of acting in the extra stuff is pretty bad, too.

No one can tell me Eowyn's song, or the Houses of Healing is any good. They're just not.

More != better.

Even FOTR, the best of the EEs, suffers from strange editing choices.

Buy these, if only for the sake of preserving the moment in time. THIS is the Oscar-winning trilogy, not the bloated EEs.

Wrong! Now Ill be the first to admit that some films extended cut really screws up and drags a film down but not these! The EE's are far superior! Stop being a sheep and take a stand people! Next it will be Lucas......again...going for the double or triple dip in Blu this time!

I'll be happy to rent these when they come out. But I am holding out for buying the Extended cuts.

You're right, when the pirate said:

"You and what army?"

and Aragorn said,

"THIS Army..."

Yeah, it was great! And it didn't ruin the suspense and delivery on that suspense at the end!

Or when Gimli blew ghosts away? LITERALLY? Sooooo amazing!

Recorded the LOTR Trilogy to my PVR. Happened to see all on PPV in HD, 5.1, etc. Not quite Blu-ray quality but at $5.00 ea. it was cheaper then buying the Theatrical version, then springing for the Extended later. Actually I had sprung for it cos they were listed as the Extended versions but weren't as it turned out. Was thinking that they would have had to have had an HD master of the EE, but since it isn't done yet... then I realised that all DVD's are made from a 1080/24P master so now I'm kinda wondering what's really holding up any EE release?? Can only be extra content, BDLive, etc.

oh crap I did not know WB bought New line... BIIIIG LET DOWN right there. Thanks for that info guys!

Also I don't think Jackson wants to s-rew us. I mean he did let us know the extended editions were just around the corner. We had the knowledge in advance to make the decision to either hold out, or not, or get both. I feel s-rewed when I dont know, and end up getting both edts. As long as I know and I have the option its really up to me how I spend my money. I like that.

Personally I wont buy unless its the extended edts. After seeing them the theatrical versions are dead in my mind not even worth watching. They are rushed and feel like half a movie.

According to Amazon this preorder is for the theatrical versions so I will be waiting. I also read on line that Jackson is busy with the Hobbit movies so more then likely it wont be until 2010 to see this "coming soon" pre order on amazon.

Just wanted to throw in my 2 cents. But I really cant wait for all 3 extended versions.

How can you be right when you are INFORMED that the EE is coming when The Hobbit is released in 2011? That means you can CHOOSE to not buy this version and not get screwed over. Waiting for the EE is not "getting screwed", it's just not getting what you wanted.

Double-dipping is nothing new. It happens on DVD and CDs. In fact, music labels are worse than studios because they'd release the album, the deluxe edition of the album, the album + DVD 12 months after release and the "tour" edition of the album. And that's before the "greatest hits" come out. Music labels don't even INFORM you in advance that they're releasing so many versions of the album.
