Yeah, and who knows when the Hobbit is actually gonna hit the theaters. They're saying the end of 2011 (christmas basically, you know it'll be christmas whatever year it's realeased), but it could easily be pushed back another year or 18 months, especially if PJ has to spend all his time prepping the ULTIMATE LOTR BOXSET.

yep, anyone that wants to put off experiencing LOTR on blu for another 3-4 years b/c they don't want to double dip, all the power to you. i'll be buying the set that comes out this year and enjoy the awesomeness that it will be!!!

and as far as it being a money issue, for the studio....yes, but for peter jackson, i personally think he cares about these movies too much to let money be an issue, he's no george lucas!!!

EXACTLY

i think its good that the theatricals are coming out now before the extendeds
fans can get their fix for a few years while the EE are being prepped and possibly all that other stuff he said he was saving for an "ultimate" edition is being put in the package

the only way i'd buy the EE cuts are if there is even more extra stuff thrown in than what they already contain!!

Yes because buying the EE is not allowing the studios to run us at all If you really wanted the studios not to "run you", you wouldn't be buying any blus at all.

Last I remembered, no one was putting a gun on your head and screaming "BUY THE SE's OR ELSE!!11!". I love LOTR so much that I will buy it the first day it comes out. I wouldn't have minded the EE's at all but then thats another story.

Calm down friend. I like the idea that its high-horsed to prefer the EEs to the SEs, since a true high-horser would curl their lip and gallop off into the distance at the merest mention of the LoTR movies, and go read the book for the umpteenth time (which even the EEs barely do justice to), in between flicking through copies of the Silmarillion for reference whilst smoking a reed pipe. So thanks for the chuckle.
As for your actual point, I think its reasonable to discuss whether to buy the SEs or wait for the EEs on this thread. Some folks posting here haven't seen the EEs and its good to share info and opinions so everyone can make more informed buying decisions which - when you get down to it - is what this entire forum is all about.

On my 50" Samsung, Episode IV looks way better than any of the LOTR films. Not sure why. I think it was the way LOTR was filmed.

Even if Tom Bombadil is a fascinating literary character who contributes a great deal to the texture of the novel(s), there's simply no way to justify including him in the film version.

Cinematically, you just can't have characters fleeing from the ultimate forces of evil stop for an extended tea party.

Default LOTR excitement

I'm just glad that it's finally happening. I'm tired of waiting for stuff like this. I don't care for the double-dipping of the studios, but that won't stop most people from buying. I am going to wait, because I can deal with the upconversion for now.

Default Shame on you New Line!!!

Shame on you New Line, they could have easily have included BOTH versions this time and done the damn thing right, the fans DO deserve it! Like how many people shelled out good dough for BOTH the theatrical and extended DVD sets that seem to be now OOP,New Line is being a greedy "CASH COW" (MOO!)I'll avoid this release like the plague until they do the right thing! Look what was done w/ Blade Runner, the fans were given the royal treatment with more cuts than stars in the heavens! THE THEATRICAL and EE's were BOTH good in their own unique ways! FANS DESERVE MUCH MORE THAN THIS SLAP IN THE FACE

You dont have to BUY LOTR to experience it, RENTING will do the trick all the same. Rental discs look and sound IDENTICAL to bought discs

I will watch these films 1, maybe 2 times a year and renting is the no brainer for me in that situation and then I will buy the real versions when they come out.

well, my god son's TV is only a 37'', so maybe thats why it looked so nice. I would imagine on a 52'' it looks no better than an SD-DVD.

I WAS going to pre-order until i saw that it is not the extended version...
to be honest, i have never seen the extended version, so i wanted to ask if it is really THAT better than the theatrical version.
thanks you.

I'm watching it on a 52" XBR6 and its hard to watch but other older SD movies don't bother me. I used to be blown away by them on my old 55" Mitsubishi projection tv in only 480p.....how sad is that? How quickly we have all become spoiled, Ha!

That's fine, I enjoyed the theatricals. Never seen the EEs, not interested in them. The movies are long enough and get everything across to the viewer.

I'm not a huge LOTR fan anyways so that maybe why....

In all honesty, it depends what you're looking for. The Theatricals are shorter, more action packed, but with less background story and details. The Extendeds around 40 minutes longer, with a lot of extra and extended scenes which bring more depth to the characters and provide more background info about middle earth and the story.

I reckon if you've read the book its a no-brainer - EEs are for that crowd. But if you prefer a thinner slice of middle earth action, you may find the theatricals more pleasing.
