EDIT (latest): GOD. DAMN. IT!

The first disk of Return of the King skips during the final meet between the Fellowship and Saruman with Wormtongue. I cleaned the disk a few times, and it's still happening.

Time to plan on returning this item to Amazon. I just wish there was a simple way of doing this, because this issue is only on THIS disc. Why not replace the Return of the King case instead of the entire box set? Y'know what the worst case scenario for this? I get a replacement set and the particular disc works fine, but now a random disc from either of the past two LOTR films turns out to be defective. I can't spend 11 hours rechecking the entire trilogy to make sure all works properly.
I have NEVER returned any BD to Amazon until the replacement arrived - and unlike the claim just posted, they have NEVER insisted upon it (maybe ya just gotta be friendly about it ). How can you return something if you don't have any bags or boxes to send it in? Hey, you don't have to stock them, right? So, you gotta wait for the replacement to arrive - which will come in a properly sized bag or box to use for the return.

Then you can replace the one disc and send the set back. Do it right away and all will be chill. Maybe you've got to be a long-time customer, I don't know. But the poster who said they'll only replace once is right - at that point it's return for a refund or credit time. Good luck.

That's...a damn good idea. I'll have to wait if Amazon ships the replacement first, but if it all comes together, I can do just that.

I already saved a box to store the box-set, btw.

Always don't have a box () and tell them you have to wait for their replacement to arrive in order to ship. You have 30 days so as long as you ship as soon as their replacement arrives, everybody will be happy.

One does not simply not have a box. I always keep spare ones for various occasions.

Right now, I don't have to do anything. The replacement order status is showing as "prepared for shipment" and it already has a estimate delivery date, so right now the table's on them.

Okay, last word 'cause we're not communicating. I sometimes sell on eBay, so I have a million bags and boxes - but when I need a replacement (not often 'cause I keep a supply of extra cases as well to hold down returns), I always say I have nothing to ship in. Amazon doesn't (and shouldn't) expect anyone to store bags and boxes - especially the millions of folks in apartments that they sell to (no room). They email a return label and note in my account that I'll ship as soon as the replacement arrives - which I always do. Hope that works for you.

Well, Amazon never prompt me the option that I have or don't have a box to ship my old item. Just the option to drop it off via UPS or not right after I selected a reason (and give comment) to return the item.

That's MY experience.

Just got my replacement today. In spite of the miscommunication, I followed that user's advice and replaced a working copy (I checked; no hiccups) of Disc 1's RotK into the old set, and am about to send the new set back to UPS towards Amazon. Thanks for the advice, Early Memphis.

Is The Fellowship of the Ring available on Blu-Ray without the color change? Is it only in the Extented Edition or is it in the normal version too? I have been thinking about buying the movies on Blu-Ray but this bothers me.

Any reason to get the extended editions of the prequels? Splitting one book into three movies made each movie already feel too long and too slow. I get that the original trilogy is better in the extended version but wouldn't the regular set be preferable for the prequels? I got the individual movies on Black Friday from BB and paid all of $22 total. I'm trying to decide if it's worth getting the extended editions and if so, if it's worth more than twice what I paid for the single non extended edition movies.

Theatrical is unaffected but pretty sure it's also a much less impressive transfer. The color on the EE looks fine to me, I really think the hate is mostly overblown, though if you are a super fan of the movie it might bug you.

No, all 3 Hobbit films profit from the Extended cuts.

Especially Desolation of Smaug and Battle of Five Armies are WAY better in their extended forms and may be the most fulfilling Extended cuts of all the Middle Earth films (compared to their Theatrical versions).

Oh.

Just after learning that, I wiki'd through her profile. Turns out that corny line of hers from the movie, that's also written in the original book although not as a one-liner. How awkward.

If you like the movies the EEs are better versions and add a lot of great scenes. I see the films more as LotR prequels than an adaption of the book, which means length is irrelevant.

I felt the prequels were just so so in the theaters. The original movies were totally amazing in the theaters. I have the extended set but also the non extended set as I never could decide which to keep. But I loved the movies in the theaters. With the prequels, I walked out of each one going, meh. The effects weren't as good. The plot wasn't as good. They ended at points that didn't feel like high points (to be continued should always happen at a high point) and the acting didn't seem all that great. I almost felt like they should have just skipped doing them altogether. The second movie was the best of the three because of Smaug but he was killed five minutes into the last movie. Truthfully, I liked the animated movie far better than the prequels. At least the animated movie was cohesive and was easy to follow.

The $55 is a good price so I'm tempted but I'm 50/50. I want the prequels because you want the story that leads into the main books but that's where I can't decide whether to keep my standard movies or get the prequels. Maybe if the price was $40 it'd be an easier buy for me, like the original extended edition has been to. I got it at $45 a year or two ago. $55 still seems like a lot for movies that weren't as good as the previous trilogy.

Set a price tracker for $40 and have a great day!

Just opened my copy of the set as a Christmas present today and sure enough, it has the same sort of packaging as the Hobbit Extended Trilogy set.

Thank goodness the slimmed down, cheaper Canadian slipcover version shown several pages back isn't as widespread as I feared.

For years I've debated waiting for the grand super duper mega extended set of all six films but the new films simply suck too hard. Finally snapped-up the original US extended package on eBay with the black boxes. It isn't as nice as the extended DVD package and buying nine DVDs with my six BDs seems a farce, especially as I already own them, but I'm looking forward to seeing these masterpieces again.
