And the debate just thuuuunderrrrs onnnnn!!!
Overall I am still pretty happy with the transfer, not ecstatic, but happy. I feel like people are working one another up into a frenzy, overly scrutinizing things that perhaps didn't need so much attention. Now this "black crush" thing is suddenly public enemy #1, when a lot of reviews and seemingly nobody else watching it actually noticed, until they pulled out their DVDs, did a side-by-side and then heard it from someone else. Meh... anyway if we get a disc replacement, I'll be all over it. If we don't, well, them's the breaks and it's still a huge improvement over every previous edition. I think the real point of all of this is that, had the green tint not been present at all, this would have been a perfect release, something that we could put on our shelves with a satisfied smile and just be content. Knowing you have a near-perfect copy of your favorite movie for posterity is just comforting. Sure the transfer is only a little bit off, but when it's the only thing holding it back from perfection, it stands out that much more, and gets into our heads. In a sense it would have been nice if it were a horrid abomination with stuttering frames and pops and hisses and the like, because you could be certain that they would fix it. With something like this where people are on the fence (and bought it anyway), it's much harder to make the big studios listen. They have our money. ![]() |

So this thing turns out exactly as I expected.
Having this 'fixed' would be a gigantic financial disaster for Warner so the easiest route of all was taken, giving a lame official statement which the apologists will swallow easily but in reality doesn't sound like anything but corporate bullshit. It even gives them the justification not to remaster the film ever again. I won't buy this set for certain now. I just could bite myself that I sold my DVDs a few months back... ![]() |

What I did find is that viewing conditions with this film are very important. It looks much better in a darkened room. |

Oh, for the love of...
And to think, I was actually going to put a disclaimer in my post about the word perfect. I gave you guys too much credit. ![]() How about... had the green not been there, I would have been PERFECTLY happy with the release, DNR or no DNR (which I didn't find to be a problem in TTT or ROTK, anyway). |

OK, i see the conversation is still the same, people complaining over the ever-so-slight color tint in fellowship and so forth.
firstly, you all had me super worried. i bought the EE box set the first day of release, could not WAIT to watch these films in HD quality, they so deserve it. i popped in Fellowship and even from the title LORD OF THE RINGS and seeing the lettering in that extremly sharp brilliant quality, i was sold. everything, the shire scenes, rivendell, i was so entranced by the sheer quality of the HD transfer and enjoying the movie as if it was really happening, i dont think i ever noticed any huge change in the color. if it is there, it certainly went unnoticed when i watched the film. i havent completely finished the movie yet, im at the begining of disc 2 (the crebain from dunland parts), but so far i honestly have no complaints, i am extremly pleased with the bluray of this film. and it seems likie it can only get better from here. sure the snow is not 100% white but its very very close to it. the whole film has a more atnique look, like it should. one thing however that bugged me that i noticed, but why the hell was the scene cut where isildur holds the rings and it becomes smaller in his hand? that was a cool scene but it looks like they cut it so that its just the small ring and no transformation showing it getting smaller. what gives? has anyone else noticed this? |

I've been a bit out of the loop on this issue, so forgive me. My basic questions are:
A) Has Peter Jackson spoken out on this issue, and if so, what has he said? B) Has the studio mentioned anything about correcting the issue, replacing any of the disc, issuing a recall, etc.? Thanks. |

"The problem though runs deeper than the green. Adding the tint compresses the dynamic range of the film. It makes it look darker and potentially crushes detail.
I think it is irrelevant as to whether Mr Jackson approved this. It is a botch and the movie deserves better." I wasn't able to put my finger on the problem before you eloquently worded it. From the menu, which used to be a brown parchment color but now is light green, I was concerned. In motion, I wasn't unduly upset by "second breakfast" which the screen caps had had me very worried by. But the overall darkness is oppressive. I hope it will be corrected at some point--perhaps with the Ultimate Box Set if/when it ever comes out. |

I just finished viewing FOTR and I really don't like the green color grading and I think it's working against 80% of the film.
I was always so glad when something was red like the Balrog or if some blue shined thre in some places. I mean most of the actors have blue eyes (or at least were wearing blue lenses) but for the first 2 hours they always looked green. I also prefered the blue Isengard by far. Isolated I would clearly prefer it and especially when over two thirds of the film now looks green anyway. In the comparision shots I remeber prefering the less redish Rivendell but again if most of the movie looks greenish, I would have welcomed scenes like this which would hve enriched the experience. Before the "new color grading" I was entertained by the visual dynamic of FOTR alone with it's many different locations with various color gradings but now most of it is green (including heaven, water and snow). And I cannot beleive that THIS was intentional. Seriously I was calm, waited and believed that it is intentional. But after seing the film myself it is very hard to believe. What a dissapointment... ![]() |
