What is so funny is we had years asking for EE of Lotr.

Now we finally get it, studio has said this is what PJ wants the movies to look like and now it isn't good enough.

LOL...

The back and forth petty arguments need to end. No one wants to read page after page full of postings/bickerings from the same individuals, which adds nothing new to the discussion.

No one has noted the BIGGEST issue here. Wtf is wrong with Fellowship of the Ring?

It's kinda funny that the movie just cannot catch a break. Last year with the Theatrical Blu rays it was the weakest of the bunch with another controversy and now with the Extended version, same thing!

Seriously what's wrong with it that there's always something off with the Blu ray of this movie?

Personally i don't care about the 'green tint' i will buy it anyways. But now that i KNOW about it i will probably spend my time watching for the tint rather than watching the actual movie.

The FOTR has greatly increased black levels. Increasing them on the sequels will do the same as far as bringing color to faces. The problem is you will be crushing out shadow detail. And yes FOTR looks nothing like TTT or ROTK with the new transfer. Isengard, the shire, etc. look vastly different in the first film compared to the sequels.

Agreed!

Also, this set is awesome, money well spent.

I wholeheartedly agree. The way the same people go on and on about these things page after page is borderline psychotic! It's actually pretty freaky.

Those topics would probably be buried between posts about the same old within minutes. I hadn't visited the board for two days and there were over forty pages added. If that doesn't say enough, I don't know what does.

The human visual cortex performs color adaptation to compensate for the white point of what it is viewing. Take a piece of white paper, and Lo! it looks white under incandescent, fluorescent and sun light despite the fact that the spectrum of light the eye is receiving varies greatly under these three conditions.

Any imaging professional is aware of this. Cameras have white balance correction built in so the image they capture will be corrected for the lighting. Color printers often have white balance corrective transforms built in. I am sure any professional cinematographer is aware of this.

So what you watch the movie by itself the green tint usually gets corrected for by your brain. But when you have a comparison the eye sees the differences because it is basing the white point on the most white item in the total scene being shown. The tinted scene will look green in a comparison.

This is why there are so many reports of people watching the film by itself and not seeing green.

The problem though runs deeper than the green. Adding the tint compresses the dynamic range of the film. It makes it look darker and potentially crushes detail.

I think it is irrelevant as to whether Mr Jackson approved this. It is a botch and the movie deserves better.

Tomorrow we are having a marathon for all 3 movies. My wife is going to make homemade blue berry waffles and homemade syrup in the morning, there will be snacks through the day and BBQ at night. After the 12 hr marathon, it will be time for fireworks!

We have invited over a group of people. It is going to be great! I popped in FOTR and it looks amazing. It is going to be a blast tomorrow.

Exactly, why bother starting a topic when it's just going to get buried under redundant posts about "cyan tint", "black crush", "disappearing orcs", and "tarnishing one rings."

WOW! That clears things up LOL! Could they possibly be any more vague?

So you don't think Warner Bros Home Entertainment group would lie so sales would not be hurt, and have to pay for a possible recall?

Just like how Wolverine was leaked, and they lied there was more parts in the film that made it better, when it clearly did not.

Interestingly, to make FOTR EE "look" right, I had to adjust the Hue setting on our Sony KDL-40XBR4 from R2 to G4.

So I added "Green" to the overall image!

It looks just about right now. I am gonna watch some other movies to see if this Hue adjustment looks "off" for other movies.

For the record, before adjusting the Hue, FOTR EE looked kinda "pinkish" -- especially skin tones. Now things look more richly green and "golden" -- if that makes any sense.

I just watched FOTR EE BD in it's entirety, and then immediately watched the first 40 min. of TTT. It was a rather jarring experience to switch from one to the other. FOTR seems to have more detail (when blacks aren't crushed into oblivion), but TTT has true pure whites(when applicable), and a brighter overall look. It was like a breath of fresh air.

The cyan/teal tint on FOTR did not go away for me. It was apparent for the entirety of the movie, although it wasn't terribly distracting in some scenes. I noticed that the whites of peoples eyes always had an unusual look that made them stand out in an odd way. When I switched to TTT, eyes looked normal.

Also after switching movies and seeing the reds and other warmer colors in TTT, it almost seemed like they just weren't there in FOTR. Everything was just a little too dull.

While I absolutely love the increased detail in FOTR, and don't really have a problem with any scene specific color grading changes, I can only imagine how much better it would look without the boosted contrast, and blanket tint.

I am going to laugh so hard if another edition comes out around the time of the hobbit. I bet their will be a 3D version of the extended films, than at the same time there will be another set for 2D where the green is not always present.

I guess we will see who is right if that happens and if its gone.

It does get redundant at times and go too far. I halfway expect to read something along these lines before long, "hey guys you're never going to believe what I just saw. I was watching the TT blu and as I was doing a pointless frame by frame analysis I could see one of Gollum's nuts hanging out! I went back and forth and compared to the dvd release and the overall clarity of the blu-ray has made this apparent. I wonder what Peter Jackson's intent was with this scene? Has anyone went to Facebook and asked him what Gollum's nuts represent in the overall ark of the story? I don't know? I kind of prefer the previous "no nuts Gollum" better. Has anyone else noticed this?" a post like this is when we will know that we've discussed this release to death.
I think the point would be that Gollum should have realized that his nuts are his real precious. If he had, he wouldn't have cared so much about the ring.
Honestly, I always found that stuff strange when I watched the making of features. When they show the artists sculpting creatures like Gollum or the trolls, they actually took the time to give them a penis?

Thanks for posting that omicron.

Now, I have an idea as to what has caused the loss of detail in some of the darker scenes.

Makes me wonder if Jackson knew that would result from the tint adjustment that was applied to this edition.

Thanks again.

That's exactly how I called it on another forum. Probably the reason that WHV isn't going to address the FOTR green tint issue this time around. When they release the next subsequent blu-ray collection following the Hobbit's home video premiere, we're going to get a "corrected" transfer for FOTR though it won't be announced as such.

As I posted earlier, there my friend is the hard $green truth of it!
