If you could see the first film like I can without that constant strong green tint running throughout the whole film (having regraded it myself to remove said strong green tint), you would understand.

I'm personally horrified by the sweeping palate change and fall in the "transfer to disc post production team messed up" camp- especially after reports that the sky is blue and snow is white in the theatrical re-release last week. Being it's only 30 percent off at Amazon anyway, I cancelled my preorder and will wait for AJ to comment on the controversy behind the discs themselves before buying a likely-to-be-recalled product (I'm cool waiting to buy the eventually corrected version with the asterisk and wouldn't complain about the non-early adopter price)

Messed up color timing is the worst of the worst in my opinion. DNR is awful too, but I'm more sensitive to colors or lack thereof. Remember Bram Stoker's Dracula? Man I'd love to get Coppolas take on the dark levels on that one. No disrespect to Bill Hunt, but I want to hear it from the horses mouth what happened and why

Is this info correct?

"Note: the six BD-50 discs in this release are Region Free. The nine supplemental DVDs are Region 1 locked."

I mean, usually Warner doesn't lock their DVDs, especially those for extras, as it is in this case.

As far as I was aware, Warner don't generally tend to lock their BD's. DVD's on the other hand, no matter which company distributes them, are always locked to a specific region (excluding Region 0's). You never get DVD's that are Region 1 AND Region 2 (for example) compatible.

They may be some top reviewers but it doesn't change a bit about how I reacted to badly color timed video transfers in the past. I am extremely sensitive to off-kilter colors and everything I have seen about this set makes me 'ugh'. So I'll gladly pass until a fixed version is available.

In case that fixed version doesn't come I'll skip this set. If I can't enjoy the first film there's no point watching the other 2.

And please don't tell me that it isn't so bad. Each time someone said that the opposite was the case. It was that bad.

Too bad that I already sold my DVDs.

I have no problem doing so.
So... now that Ken review's up and his screenshots match the ones we've seen this week, are you going to admit you were wrong that the screenshots were not reflective of the final product? Or do you really have to wait until the 28th, hoping we'd forget?

Just busting your chops.

Ken:
Thanks very much for such an honest and extensive review.

I'll say it again: Although I am content with the new coloring, I would still LOVE to have confirmation that the new appearance that is on the disc (not in theaters) is what Jackson intended.

I would like to hear that as well. In fact, I would like to hear something from PJ or WB on the matter.

Agreed - The review didnt whine about the changes - it just spelled them out and we can make up our own minds. I would have preferred everything be the same as my DVD set, just blu-ray quality but it is what it is.

Id also like to know what jackson really intended. There is alwys a lot of talk about Directors intent but unless I see a statement right from the director, I tend to take all these "directors intent" comments with a grain or two of salt.

"The One Review To Rule Them All"..............

Seriously Ken, that review was off the charts awesome! What a nice surprise to wake up this morning before work to see this posted which was my #1 most anticipated review. Honest, detailed, level headed, viewed with a critical eye, fair and genuine. I love how you not only hit the color controversy head on, but jumped right in the waters and explored it from all angles and both sides of the debate in great length.

As another poster said in here, you went above and beyond. Hope you are enjoying some much needed rest after that one! Thanks again....

I would love to hear this as well one way or the other. It wont change my opinion as I would strongly prefer the old coloring from everything I have seen and Ken's screens now confirm once again, but it would put this part of the confusion to rest which would be great.

I'm now starting to believe that Jackson won't make a statement until right after the discs are released, ala WBHV and their new edition of Lolita that they announced days after releasing the first version on Blu via Amazon and the Kubrick boxset. That was a true d!ck move.

Indeed, but considering the rather small percentage of people who would participate in an exchange it'd save them a lot of money if they don't have to recall the entire production. That's business.

I'll wait for sure until some official statement is made.

The damn film is green!
I was incredibly impressed by the A/B comparison to the DVD.
Then incredibly DEPRESSED by the youtube split screen comparison a few posts above.

It doesn't take a rocket scientist. Just look up! The sky is blue. Not green. Snow is white. NOT GREEN. There's clearly and obviously a green tint over EVERYTHING, in EVERY shot... and this just looks wrong... not as in "my opinion is it's wrong," but WRONG, PERIOD.
