The CG is better than most of the stuff today: if not all of it.

Thank you once again for a thorough and well balanced review. And, in this particular case, I can only begin to imagine how hard (and scary) must have been to tread on such a thin, cracking ice.

As a side note, if only you could address this particular shot:

http://screenshotcomparison.com/comparison/58337

Green tint aside, is it really that blurry and indistinct on the BD?
Aside from it being from a rip, the theatrical version is sharpened a bit.
Here's the EE shot slightly de-greened and sharpened: http://img21.imageshack.us/img21/9996/lotr3.jpg

And before I leave, just a little offtopic as my way of thanking you: whatever you do this weekend, DON'T go to see GREEN LANTERN.

Apparently, this is a good time to be wary of green...

The shot you reference is a tad soft in the EE release (not quite as much as the screenshot you linked to suggests), but I believe it's only because that particular shot was artificially sharpened in the TC release. There are moments throughout the EE of FOTR that are a bit softer than their TC counterparts, but it's a filmic softness attributable to the original photography and resulting 2K source.

At least as far as I can tell

These movies don't represent the cutting edge of digital film mastering these days but they still look pretty solid to my eye

Thank you for the review! It was refreshing to see a reviewer attempt to tackle the new color timing head on without resorting to broad generalities or blind gushing and bashing as seen throughout this thread. I think a lot of the reviewers for this will get caught up in the mind blowingly improved picture quality that they will brush aside the new color timing issues. Even I am blown away at how great the picture quality looks for this, even if the new color timing aggravates me.

I wouldn't say all of it, main problem is that in LOTR there's a LOT of CG crowd shots and certain scenes ends up looking pretty fake on bluray

Thanks 42041 for the comparisons, there's a few big differences. Having a fair bit of trouble trying to view it in the intended fullscreen resolution despite clicking on the right links, seems a bit random

Think I'll still wait for it to get cheaper though, haven't felt the need to watch LOTR again

thank you so much for this!

i don't know what to think of the new master. the green tint does not bother me that much (actually I think i prefer it that way) but snow colors... i guess I'll watch the movie and make up my mind then

UPDATE

just another comparison, i found it on hometheaterforum.com

Hi Ken,

I've got to say that I was very impressed by your review of the fellowship of the ring extended edition blu-ray (and indeed the rest of the trilogy). It came across as sincere, honest and most important of all, completely rational.

I particularly liked the fact that there was no hyperbole about how great the film and the trilogy as a whole is, like in some other reviews i've read recently. We know how great these films are and are all big fans, otherwise we wouldn't be interested in these extended editions in the first place. Your detailed observations came across as well researched and well reasoned. Great job!!!

I look forward to reading more of your reviews in the near future.

I'm not one to pick movies apart. My thing is I get one of my favorites on blu-ray. Is it perfect? No, but I'm sure it's going to look much better than it's DVD counterpart. This is still better than seeing it on TV. This pretty much goes for any movie. Star Wars is another example. Yeah, it's not perfect; we still get George's 'versions' of the movies, but to me it's better than NO Star Wars on blu-ray.

I personally can't see much difference between the screens for the FOTR EE Blu-Rays and TE Blu-Rays other than color. But then I have always thought all 3 TE of the trilogy look amazing on Blu and are a huge upgrade from the DVDs.

I think I'll wait till the extended editions come down to under $50.

Hopefully Blockbuster online gets these in so I can at least rent them.

In the first Hobbit video blog there was brief footage of the Fellowship of the Ring. These two screen grabs are taken right from that video blog; I captured them using VLC media player.

While watching the video blog for the first time two months ago I was wondering why the orange tint was removed, now I know. If this new recoloring of this sequence is in Peter's official video blog then I can safely assume that this recoloring has his official ok, right?

Fantastic review, Ken! Really well done. You covered all your bases and quite thoroughly. You should be quite happy with your review.

It's funny, I must be used to some of these shots by now, but they don't look as horrible as I remember them looking. I'll have to go back to some of the earlier screen grabs and compare.

EDIT: Just compared with capsaholic and they are indeed the same. Oh, well.

I still wish the original coloring was used and that Jackson would make a definitive statement about the presentation on Blu-ray and not just the regrading of the Theatrical Extended Edition presentation, as there are some doubts still circling about differences between the BD and the theatrical presentation.

I guess they have to re-do the color timing of the Jack Black MTV spoof.

Do they include that spoof anywhere in this release?
