It hadn't gone through *digital* color grading PRIOR to this blu-ray release because the original Fellowship was "mastered" onto 35mm analog film for the intermediate, so much of the "color grading" had to take place using traditional analog means.

This is the first time the entire Fellowship has been mastered to a digital intermediate, allowing digital color grading tools to be used comprehensively for the first time.

You know they won't. They'll take their green tint complaint to the grave.

And neither should YOU (Yes, YOU).
A director and cinematographer convincing a studio to spend $$$ to re-constitute a 4 hour film, previously mastered to analog intermediate, for the first time from the source elements to a digital intermediate giving them the chance to color-grade scenes according to their artistic design in the same way they were able to do with the second 2 films (because they had always been mastered to DI) isn't "Shoddy work".

From what I recall, a good deal of FOTR was digitally graded, just not the whole film. Again, the DVD feature that was mentioned shows work being done on FOTR. They are working on it digitally. So, unless this was work done specifically for the DVD and not the theatrical release, FOTR had color grading work done to it digitally.

The whole trilogy was shot on film right? And then they scanned the film and color-graded it in the computer... it was a digital file they tampered with, right? I don't get the difference. I guess you lost me... somewhere care to explain??

Some guys over at cinefacts.de are going crazy because Warner
slowed down the German audio. There's even a comparison:

That is the other issue. I would simply go rent this if I could, but where? I dont know of a single video store still open in my neck of the woods and who knows if/when Netflix will get these. I also dont know anyone else who is buying the set, so that option is out. The gamble of buying is the only option and if you end up not happy with what you see, you cant return it.

Having watched about an hour in, I gotta say it doesn't seem like the green is all that oppressive. Yes the greens of grass and plants are VERY green, but stuff like Gandalf's beard looks much more as it should. Maybe it's because it is in motion, but the screenshots don't do it justice. FOTR looks glorious. Totally satisfied with my purchase.

Now if I could find where they got these 5-disc black cases.

Sorry for any levity, but it is rather widely known that Knowles is a shill to the nth degree. If you give him any piece of rare swag, he gives your movie a great review. He was rather infamous for not giving a good review to Inception, which he didn't receive much from, but loving POS films like Green Lantern, which he received a lot from.

I would take Harry Knowles with a grain of salt because he doesn't know what he's talking about. He gives cinephiles a bad name and his DVD articles are trash. That's why I posted the sarcastic phrase, thank you very much.

That's much better, thank you VERY much! Indeed, very informative. And no, I did not know the guy to be honest. *searches wiki* *finds this http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedi..._Skidmore.jpg*
not wanna be rude here, but if a picture is worth a thousand words... I think all is said and done. I can't take seriously this guy seeing this picture.

anyway, I'm waiting for DaViD Boulet to explain what he meant before I make up my mind.

I would like to buy the box but there is a confusion regarding the French subtitles. Some sites like Waren Bros shop say there are French subtitles and others sites say there aren't French subtitles. Can somebody check this for me? Thanks.

has it ever occurred to anyone this is what PJ wanted? not the color thing, but the idea of weeding out the supposed "real" fans of the film and accept any changes to the film big or small, and exposing the so-called "trained" ones that secretly didn't like the film anyway? Lucas has done this to some of you already. he calls it "Special Edition"... and when The Wars come out, it will take over Rings as the No. 1 title released, EVER! until Indy comes out... with it's "changes"...

now I'm not saying: get a life, stop whining, get it anyway. not my place to say that. but, it's not necessarily nice for you to talk down to those that don't see a problem either, (untrained eye, you're just blind sheep who'll buy any piece of crap, mine is better than yours so shut up) The Clouds Aren't White! won't make me enjoy The Story any less... My Opinion ONLY...

funny that so many members had posted the same BH's comments without noticing that others had already posted them. good intention, but for others, it is repetitive. too busy to read previous posts i guess...

I say that if something has been online for over an hour, it's been on this forum. I appreciate that so many people feel the need to add something to the forum, but yeah, some of this stuff has been on many pages.

I'm not trying to offend anyone, just make them aware.

agreed. think by next Mon, many will start giving their take on the FOTR transfer. we will then have much better idea whether the green tint is good or bad.

Thank you! We have a winner!

FotR arrived a decade ago, when the digital intermediate (DI) process was in its infancy. Analogue shots only had the capability of normal photographic timing, meaning basic changes in yellow, cyan and magenta exposures and density. This was the basis of the problematic theatrical Blu-ray, which was scanned dupe.

While the other two films had gone through the DI stage completely, the first in the series had been the unfortunate step-child, having arrived just a bit early. Now, for the first time, the entire film, inclusive of analogue shots has been taken back into post-production, allowing the filmmakers their shot at full digital grading with a full set of modern tools.

For the record, a digital grade toward a DI record will normally take weeks or over a month for a normal length production. 200-400 hours is not unusual. Double that for LotR, and calculate the time and expense. A DI color suite with a top colorist generally bills out between $600-800 per hour.
When a filmmaker gets a shot at this, it is not taken lightly.

This is not something generally performed on a Macbook Air.

RAH

I stayed up until 4AM watching FOTR. I believe the green controversy is a bit overblown, the movie looks absolutely fantastic!!

Anyone know how to change my description from "junior member" to something else?
