I got through two hours last night......It looks amazing. Especially when you compare it to the TE. I was actually quite shocked. I can't wait to finish FOTR tonight.

After watching a friend's copy of FOTR last night, I do admit it is the best it has ever looked. I went out and bought it today. After selling my TE BDs and putting that money towards the EE, plus a $5 off coupon, I only spent $46 out of pocket.

The 'Short Cut To Mushrooms' scene where they hide under the tree from the Ringwraith is absolutely gorgeous, and the whole movie has much more detail and depth than I've ever seen in this movie.

As relieved as I am that it doesn't look nearly as bad as some of the screenshots led me to believe, I still think that the contrast is a bit too high in some scenes, and there is still a consistent mild cyan hue to the whole of FOTR.

I am very happy with what it looks like, but I still think it could look a little better if they adjusted the contrast and removed the overall cyan hue. I am still holding out hope for a disc replacement program to correct this, but if they don't, I am still pretty happy with it.

Another thing that kind of surprised me is that I have to turn the volume up about three or four notches higher to get it to the same level as the TE BD. Once I do turn it up a little, it sounds absolutely amazing! It's just a little odd that it is mixed a tiny bit lower than the TE.

Yeah, I was wondering the same thing, but then I forgot to mention it. Thanks for bringing that up. Harry is not known for his clear writing style by any means. It's kind of a running joke.

I appreciate that ... especially after having been told by some that none of my comments have any merit and consist only of saying, "I don't like it."

Man, FOTR looks fantastic, especially compared to the TE. This is an absolutely beautiful transfer, and its the best I've ever seen it look. I'll gladly hold onto this until the Ultimate collection with both Hobbit films.

Its why I will never pre-order anything again, last time I pre-ordered something was Halo 2 an I received my copy... almost 2 weeks after the release, you cant imagine how frustrating it was. Anyway when you think about it there is ALWAYS copies available to your closer store and Ive never seen the price be announced lower than the price of the release date. The only reason I can see is if you live in a very rural area and that the closer electronic store is 1 hour away from your house.

So why people pre-order it?

On another note, just bought my copy of LOTR EE but have not opened it yet. Still not sure if I keep it or return it and wait for maybe a different release later. I dont really care about the green tint, what bother me is that the movie is now darker than the original. Maybe someone could reassure me about this point.

Since the perception of and feelings about the heightened contrast are highly subjective, it's hard to say how you'll feel about it. Some feel neutral, some prefer it, some don't like it because of the loss of shadow detail. I don't know how helpful that is, but that's pretty much where it stands at the moment.

Take care,
HeKS

I got mine from Amazon yesterday, and upon taking off the plastic and opening the box, I got a whiff of an unbelieveable smell. At first I thought it was melted plastic from it having sat on my front porch in 90 degree sunlight all day, but then I realized the inner plastic cases didn't smell at all, only the outer cardboard case.

I've left the outer box open with the inner cases removed for a day, and the smell has mostly dissipated, though not completely. It smells more like paint to me, actually, which makes me think it's the smell of the black spraypaint they used on the inside. Another thought was the glue of the box melted and stunk up while out in the sun. There's no sign of wet/melted paint/glue/whatever, though. Very strange, but no biggie.

My own suspicision - and I want to be clear that these are my thoughts only, uninformed by anything other than my own feelings - is that the lack of one stems from one or all of three things: 1) Jackson may consider this a non-issue, being happy with the look of the film and discs personally, and having already had Lesnie look into it (according to Harry's report), 2) he's just extremely busy with production on The Hobbit films, and/or 3) Jackson may be aware that - right now - it's only people on a limited number of online A/V enthusiast forums and websites who are even aware of the issue, whereas the moment he issues a personal statement on the matter, it might get picked up by the more mainstream entertainment press (understandably curious about The Hobbit production) and suddenly an limited Internet forum kerfuffle gets blown up into a much larger headache.
#3 is only an issue for Jackson if the studio is lying or being disingenuous about the tint being intentional. If it's truly how he wanted it to look, why would he care WHO finds out about the tint? However, if it's NOT intentional, then he'd have to admit that he let people believe it WAS in order to save Warner Brothers some dough in replacement disc costs.

I also don't buy the "extremely busy" line. It's been a few weeks since this ballyhoo started, and he couldn't find time to make ONE Facebook post saying "Yes, the green tint is intentional"? He hasn't even heard MENTION of it, even though it been discussed on every Hobbitt fansite on the net? Unlikely.

And if he considers it a non-issue, why not say so? Why not say, "You people are getting yourselves all worked up over nothing! The green tint was my idea, and I think it makes everything SUPER GREAT!"

I honestly don't care if it was intentional or not, I don't like it, and I'm not buying it (at least not til it's under $40). But I find it kind of annoying that people are taking a vague studio memo as word from Jackson On High. Jackson hasn't commented directly on the color tint. And the only reason I'm interested in that fact at all is because it leaves the door open to the possibility that the studio is lying, and that eventually a replacement disc or set will be released without the green tint nonsense. If that never happens, that's okay too. I've lived this long with the DVDs, and I can go on enjoying them.

I just unboxed this BEAST and it is crazy nice. They did a great job on the best Trilogy ever made. Only complaint I have with the box set so far is why is Liv Tyler on every picture in it? She was barely in the movie. Anyway if anyone is interested in watching my unboxing here is the link.
. FYI my first unboxing ever so let me know what you think, tips are more then welcome.

I was going to mention this last night when I read your post about the audio, but got sidetracked and forgot to comment. I assumed there was simply an overall volume difference between the TE and EE and after you turned up the EE a bit then it would come back up to par (or slightly better) with your previous impressions of other versions. Glad to hear this did the trick.

I bought the set today as well
