They are 2 sided, but each side has the theatrical and extended on it. They're only flippers to cut down the amount of discs for the set. If the trilogy was spread out, it would be 6 discs, the same as the extended only releases.

Yep, that's what I was referring to in my last paragraph. Never bought them myself, but I thought the same as bookcase: they were flippers, with two discrete versions, rather than one branched stream. [Edited to add: Ahh, I see you've added more info to say they were both flippers and branched. Fair enough. It's odd, the capacity of a DVD compared to the data size of the film transfer itself often seems to allow for more than the equivalent on BD. I do wonder whether they'll be able to do the same with a Blu-ray version.] Anyway, I think my point still stands: so far, the two versions on Blu-ray are in separate sets, but I doubt anyone will be surprised if they get re-released in a compendium version once The Hobbit is done. Here's a post that refers to what I mean by the changes: Quote:
So it's definitely possible to do the same on BD since it's essentially the EE disc with branching included. I just don't see them going through the trouble of doing it. Last edited by MifuneFan; 03-14-2014 at 02:55 PM. |

I'm not sure why that was never brought over to Blu-Ray... Maybe in a few years it will be... |

So, a seemless branching would have the extended scenes be a sharp contrast to the rest of the film. And, they won't be willing to go back and invest to have both of those masters readjusted again to blend well together. That would be a lot of work. Then it would have to get reprogrammed on top of everything. ![]() |

Even if they didn't try to branch the films themselves, they could basically reissue the discs already available, just in a single set: three discs for the original cinema cuts, six for the EEs, and the extras from the existing EE set could all be collapsed onto 3 BDs ... twelve discs in all. That's achievable, don't you think? |

I thought I'd share what I did with the "Lord Of The Rings" trilogy extended editions: I bought the 2-disc "Target Exclusive" extended editions for $10 each then I got the theatrical edition Steelbooks at Best Buy for $9.99 each. I put each pair of extended discs in the Steelbooks, put the Special Features DVD discs that already came in the Steelbooks in clear plastic sleeves and put those in each Steelbook. I sold the theatrical version Blu-Ray discs on Ebay for $10 total since I never plan on watching them. I know I am missing the extra "Appendices" DVD discs but I had them before when I owned the Extended Edition trilogy on DVD (which I also sold on Ebay years ago for $25) and had already watched them; I doubt I will ever watch them again anyway. All in all I spent about $50 putting together my own Extended Steelbook trilogy but I am rather proud of it. I also cut out the back of the Target Blu-Ray covers and glued them to the back of the Steelbook backcards. I really like the artwork on the Steelbooks and am glad I got them.

Wow, they look fantastic. I prefer those steels compared to the ones we're getting here in the UK. |
