I thought those were flipper discs.

They are 2 sided, but each side has the theatrical and extended on it. They're only flippers to cut down the amount of discs for the set. If the trilogy was spread out, it would be 6 discs, the same as the extended only releases.

Hi MifuneFan,
Yep, that's what I was referring to in my last paragraph. Never bought them myself, but I thought the same as bookcase: they were flippers, with two discrete versions, rather than one branched stream.

[Edited to add:
Ahh, I see you've added more info to say they were both flippers and branched. Fair enough. It's odd, the capacity of a DVD compared to the data size of the film transfer itself often seems to allow for more than the equivalent on BD. I do wonder whether they'll be able to do the same with a Blu-ray version.]

Anyway, I think my point still stands: so far, the two versions on Blu-ray are in separate sets, but I doubt anyone will be surprised if they get re-released in a compendium version once The Hobbit is done.

Haha, I was very careful not to stray into that swamp again! ;-)

But I still wouldn't be surprised myself if we get a complete colour regrade and remaster with the next release of the Fellowship EE.

Reading up on that edition some more at some LOTR forums, it sounds like it's basically the Extended cut on the disc, and branching is used more to remove the extended scenes for the Theatrical cut, rather than adding the EE to the theatrical. In other words, the specific scenes from the Theatrical that looked different aren't included on that edition, but rather the EE version of those scenes.

Here's a post that refers to what I mean by the changes:
Quote:
The only issue is that with these new seamlessly branched DVD's, if you're a purist, you're not actually getting the theatrical versions. There were some FX changes made for the extended editions that they didn't bother to change for the theatrical. For instance, in Fellowship there's a car in the background of one shot in the field. For the extended, they took it out, and now it's gone if you watch the theatrical version on the seamless branching DVD's.

And there's something similar on Two Towers, some landscape changes that were not replaced. I believe this is accurate
http://originaltrilogy.com/forum/top...Ds/topic/7291/

So it's definitely possible to do the same on BD since it's essentially the EE disc with branching included. I just don't see them going through the trouble of doing it.

Thanks for the info!
There is a version on DVD that allows you to do this.
I'm not sure why that was never brought over to Blu-Ray...
Maybe in a few years it will be...

For the Blu-rays though, they now have 2 very different HD masters of each version as is noticeable in the picture quality and colour timing of each separate individual release.

So, a seemless branching would have the extended scenes be a sharp contrast to the rest of the film. And, they won't be willing to go back and invest to have both of those masters readjusted again to blend well together. That would be a lot of work. Then it would have to get reprogrammed on top of everything.

See my posts above. The DVD with seamless branching is using the EE for the Theatrical cut too. So any transfer from the Theatrical BD wouldn't be included, if they did it the same way again. That of course means a green tinted theatrical version of FotR

Interesting stuff. Thanks for posting this.

Even if they didn't try to branch the films themselves, they could basically reissue the discs already available, just in a single set: three discs for the original cinema cuts, six for the EEs, and the extras from the existing EE set could all be collapsed onto 3 BDs ... twelve discs in all. That's achievable, don't you think?

They are probably waiting a few years until The Hobbit is done and out, and then they will a set similar to the Wizard's Collection/Hogwart's Collection out.

^ Sorry mate, I have to ask: do you not read other people's posts at all?

You keep posting statements essentially the same as someone else has said only a couple of posts before yours.

When I post, it's that I read from the last time I was in the Thread.
I get to a certain post, be it someone asking a question or something else, and i post at that point. Then I continue on from the previous point.

Default Extended Edition Steelbook Editions

I thought I'd share what I did with the "Lord Of The Rings" trilogy extended editions: I bought the 2-disc "Target Exclusive" extended editions for $10 each then I got the theatrical edition Steelbooks at Best Buy for $9.99 each. I put each pair of extended discs in the Steelbooks, put the Special Features DVD discs that already came in the Steelbooks in clear plastic sleeves and put those in each Steelbook. I sold the theatrical version Blu-Ray discs on Ebay for $10 total since I never plan on watching them. I know I am missing the extra "Appendices" DVD discs but I had them before when I owned the Extended Edition trilogy on DVD (which I also sold on Ebay years ago for $25) and had already watched them; I doubt I will ever watch them again anyway. All in all I spent about $50 putting together my own Extended Steelbook trilogy but I am rather proud of it. I also cut out the back of the Target Blu-Ray covers and glued them to the back of the Steelbook backcards. I really like the artwork on the Steelbooks and am glad I got them.

Wow, they look fantastic. I prefer those steels compared to the ones we're getting here in the UK.

[Show spoiler]
As I much as I like what you've done here I honestly prefer the gold packaging and black cases of the extended set. I paid $70 for it shortly after release and I don't regret it a bit as that set has definitely gotten its money's worth in my house. I also decided to keep all 9 discs because I enjoy the extras on the extended set much more than on the theatrical releases. I picked up the theatrical trilogy in a single case Black Friday of 2012 at Wal-Mart for $9.96, which forgoes the extras DVD for each, but as you said I have watched those enough times as well.

I'm thinking of either trying to find the individual release slipcovers or just buying the releases themselves for them to put on the cases from the trilogy set. I love the cover art on those

I have never used a DC before but if it says it expired in 2012 is it really expired or will it let someone use it still? Thanks.
