But, regardless of what they think of the colour "issue," it cannot be argued that the EE is remastered for maximum visual detail quality. The theatrical BD is just not "up to snuff" in that department... or so I gather from what I've read online. I won't ever watch the theatrical releases since seeing the EE when they first released on DVD.

Can't imagine 3D is in a place now where any studio would pay to do a conversion on these movies. Also 4k would mean redoing all the effects, which I doubt they will ever do (and might look terrible given how the Hobbit looks).
I'm happy with my extended trilogy set. ![]() |

Ahh to hell with it. I bought it. Maybe should not have considering I am not too sure about the color grading of the first film. But hey I really am not sure what 4K is going to add to this at all except being expensive as hell. You really can't get much more out of a 2K master tbh. If they ever regrade the first film I suppose I will get that. For now this should suffice.
Watch it be 25 dollars come Christmas or Black Friday lol. |

The description on the individual titles for this set states that the UV and iTunes codes are expired. I know with some movies you can still redeem them. Does anyone know if that's the case with this set? I'm thinking of buying the set since Amazon has it for $28.
For reference, this is the set I'm referring to: https://www.blu-ray.com/movies/The-L...Blu-ray/59886/ Thanks |

Blind Buy - 'cause no-one would know unless they tested the code/s - and who's gonna give them out for "testing"?

Never's a long time. After sixteen years, Fox let Lucas redo a ton of effects in the STAR WARS trilogy, so I'd say "unlikely to happen anytime soon" would be a more realistic statement.

Those were new and different effects. They could re-sell the picture as a new experience. This would be the same effects exactly, just at a higher resolution. Most people thought that the picture they saw on giant movie screens was high-enough resolution.

The amount of CG effects in the original Star Wars SEs are a miniscule drop in the bucket if that compared to all of the CG that was done in the Lord of the Rings. It would be a remarkably huge overhaul if were are talking redoing ALL of the CG in LOTR for 4K. As I said, they would basically be remaking the movies. That is not going to happen. They are not going to be spending tens and tens of millions of dollars (or maybe even more) to do so. The costs would be extraordinary and not worth it in any business sense to attempt to sell to the population other than the 1% of us who care about these things. Maybe fix up a few things here and there like what was done in Star Wars? Sure, maybe. But that is not the context to which I was referring. |

There's also the question of why they would do such a thing. 1080p is likely going to be "good enough" for consumers for our lifetimes. Even if 4k becomes the new standard I would guess like 80% of older movies will just get 4k upscales and consumers will barely notice or care.
I guess if they really want to remaster LotR in 4k they could upscale most effects and redo some really close shots, but I don't see them wanting to go through even that expense when 95% of consumers will be just fine streaming a 4k upscale of the 2k masters. |

This, and also The Hobbit EE films but I don't even see it happening. I've noticed that most of the major discussion regarding the tint is only with FotR but it is in fact also present in TTT & RotK EE's. The tint is just not as heavy or noticeable. UJ & DoS both have it as bad as FotR.

Then again, given how UHD BD will be providing higher bit depth and a wider colour gamut and a possible HDR regrade, even a pristine upscale from the 2K masters with all that on top would provide almost as many tangible benefits as a proper 4K rebuild. But, as Velvet is fond of reminding us, the demand dictates supply. Let's see how UHD starts off with selling genuine 4K content before we get to the inevitable consumer confusion that upscaling will bring. |
