Well The Hobbit was shot in 3D from the get-go, so that's entirely different from the 3D conversion needed to make LOTR 3D.

I think you're dead wrong about The Hobbit's 3D being underwhelming, though - at least, in theaters with 48 fps it was probably the most "real" looking 3D experience I've ever had.

I think Titanic looks better, and many animated films. I just don't see Jackson spending $18 mill to convert each LOTR film tho

The Hobbit? Real? Now those are two words that shouldn't be in the same sentence.

It was in Pittsburgh and I found him on AVS, that's really all I remember. I think he had a J-name. I do admit that old Toshiba likely changed a bit over time, but it's still what I watch 90% of my movies on and it looks pretty fantastic. I think I'm just used to LCD's quirks and don't even notice them anymore, honestly.

Btw, how much better are these Calibration discs than what Lucasfilm used to put on their DVDs?

Just scored the trilogy box set in a pawnshop for $5 because the guy clearly thought it was a DVD.

I can only speak for DisneyWOW, but it's no better. If you have the old THX optimizer or an early Sony BD with the test patterns on it then you have everything the DisneyWOW disc has on it, so save your money.

I know we are talking about video here, but did the THX Optimizer stuff have audio tones as well? For video, the AVS disc is the best option I have found (and it’s free!), while for audio, Disney WOW is fine as long as you allow for the fact that the audio tones are not recorded at the standard levels (they are all at -20dbSF, meaning that ref would measure 85db/95db for the sats/LFE). OTOH, Spears & Munsil is pretty good too (and correct on the audio levels at 75dB all around).

They all do the same so long as they are rec 709 (i.e, HD). Some are more user friendly than others and having better explanations.

No praying necessary. You just have to remember how business works. The executives won't just come out and release a full series set right away. First they have to release each theatrical cut individually. Then the extended cuts individually. Then the theatrical cuts as a set. Then the extended cuts as a set. Then a 6 film theatrical cut set. THEN, finally, they can release a 6 film extended cut set.

It's, in their eyes, the best way to maximize profits in getting people to buy the films 3 or 4 times each.

Why wait, the two EE box sets look lovely and the LAST thing they need is more featurettes.
