yeah if you already own the EEs on DVDs you're better off with those 2-disc sets than the big box, unless you don't have the LEs and want those documentaries (which only come with the box but TBH are nothing worth losing sleep over).

thanks for the info guys.

i was thinking about picking up the 2 disc sets, getting some different bluray cases and then just combining the bluray discs w/the discs from the dvd set.

i did read last night that the extra discs in the bluray set were all dvd's, not blu's.

although i love the packaging for the dvd EE's.

I would say next Christmas at the earliest, especially if they're different discs. I would also say it is very likely Warner wait to see what happens with UHD before putting it out. I do agree it is coming eventually though, but if on normal BD I bet it's the same discs with maybe a new bonus disc of completely superfluous featurettes.

Yeah, Petey-boy's already mentioned that he still has several hours of deleted scenes we haven't seen (no doubt for a reason!), some of which may even be re-integrated into the movies for a kind of Super-EE version. And no doubt there'll be yet more behind-the-scenes stuff in the vaults.

But all I personally really want is a proper remaster of Fellowship. He could do that on its own, sell it as a single update with the same disc art as the sets, and outsell NZ's GDP all over again.

this is one set of movies where i'd gladly rebuy them just to get the new bonus features.

i love the bonus material on the EE's......and if there's more out there that may be coming....sign me up!!!

Just finished my Hobbitses + LOTR extended edition rewatch with ROTK and.....wow. The Hobbit trilogy doesn't come close to the power of LOTR but it's a wonderfully whimsical hors d'oeuvre in its own right, LOTR itself is just incredible though and I enjoyed the heck out of the EE's. For the time in ages it didn't feel like I was clock watching, it all just flowed from one film to the next and even the 87 endings of ROTK didn't drag, they're now the culmination of 6 films rather than 3 so in that context it really worked - I didn't want it to end!

I feel like watching them all again.

You watched them all in one sitting?

wow. That's impressive. I bet your bottom feels sore. I've loaned my LOTR EE to someone who will no longer have the privilege of borrowing again after he returns the blu rays to me.

Anyway, in a way, I am glad I didn't have it around for so long. Now that the Hobbit series are finished, I want to watch those first (when I eventually get the EE version). I am looking forward to those and seeing how they work with the rest of the LOTR. It's been difficult avoiding reading up on The Hobbits.

Sorry, I didn't mean I watched them in one sitting, I've been watching one film every night since Thursday.

As for how they match up, I think you'll dig it 'cause they did a really good job with it IMO.

It really is all very enjoyable. I wish they could do more stuff in that world, but it will never happen now.

I'm just thankful for what we've got, and unlike a certain other famous fantasy saga with prequels it all fits together remarkably well (though it helped that The Hobbit book was already written, natch). It's wonderful watching Fellowship and seeing all the nods to The Hobbit story, thank heavens the rights to that hadn't been tied up by the Tolkien estate when they started making LOTR.

I've still got the Five Armies commentary and the second extras disc to get through so I'm not done with Middle-earth just yet, when I'm finished with that I might work my way through the LOTR EE extras again (not all the commentaries though!!).

Better do it before X-Files arrives...you'll be up to your waste in Mulder and Scully in a couple weeks.

You actually enjoyed the LOTR EEs this time around? I'm so proud of you!

Are they your favorite versions now or would you still say you prefer the theatrical cuts?

Tough call. If I were to pull one off the shelf to watch on its own it'd be the theatrical for sure, but apart from Fellowship they're not designed to work as a standalone piece so in a full rewatch it'd have to be the EEs.

How can you say Fellowship is designed to work as a standalone film? There's no resolution to anything.
