Yeah both trilogy boxes have pretty tight room. I have the original more deluxe box though, the new thinner case might be different.

The slipcover regression formula, slips within slips within slips with slips within slips within...

Can't help with pics but they changed it to a simple thin slipcase, from what I read. Someone posted pics somewhere. Amazon users might have posted pics. I have the original with thick cardboard and the wraparound thing.

Lol. Disc sleeves. I wouldn't touch that for $100.

Are the sleeves in that set really that bad? I've been tryna get an empty copy of that digibook packaging for the SW saga, I have the Amaray set with the Vader cover but the other one just looks way better.

I managed to extract the discs from the sleeves without apparent damage, whatever that's worth.

People exaggerating. I have every release with book sleeves, and not a single scratch. And they have been taken out, and put back several times, probably close to a hundred, I have kids, and they watch and handle, and NOT A SINGLE SCRATCH.

So don't let a few dissuade you. It is a reliable form of packaging. Where scratches occur, is from handling, specifically when the discs are stacked on top of one another, that's when the scratching occurs. Then they are placed already scratched in the sleeves. It is in manufacturing, that this occurs.

What are the differences between the 2011 and 2012 releases of the extended edition boxsets and how can you tell which one you own?

Do you folks prefer the theatrical or extended editions of the film and why?

I'm considering downgrading from my EE box set for the standard editions as I find the EEs to drag quite a bit.

I know Peter Jackson said the theatrical versions are the definitive versions of the films, but I'm not sure if this comment was made out of marketing than anything else. I know he's gotten a lot of flack, especially for the ending of TTT.

I'm the opposite. After watching the EE trilogy, I find the theatricals to be incomplete and extremely irritating. I can't ever bring myself to watch anything other than the EE versions. They are far richer in context and much deeper in character which creates a much stronger connection for me as a viewer.

I like both about the same but for different reasons. It helps if you think of the theatrical versions as three standalone but interconnected films, and the extended versions as a 6-part epic miniseries (or, I guess nowadays, a 12-part "limited" series).

If I had to pick, I would probably say I prefer the theatricals, but there is one scene from the extended ROTK that I think absolutely should have been in the theatrical version. I think Peter Jackson has said the reason he cut the Saruman scene from ROTK was that it felt like leftover business from TTT (which it kind of is), but it's a very important wrap-up of two of the main villains of the trilogy. It probably could have been trimmed down a little, but it really needed to be there.

Yeah, the EEs play more like a sprawling 6-part miniseries but the theatricals are better films, if that makes sense. And I'm not enslaved to the idea of the theatricals being "incomplete" because this whole endeavour is "incomplete", there's still so much from the book that isn't there and I find the two versions of the films to be fascinating examples of how editing works and why. The theatrical versions won 17 Oscars between them and they should always be preserved in some form (which is also Jackson's take on it, thankfully).
