![]() I mean, these movies have made so much money that I'd think they could spare some money to update some of the VFX. I also don't want full on Lucas, but agree that the Star Trek (and TNG) updates were tastefully done. Make the LotR Special Editions, give them a limited theatrical release, and then put them out on UHD and I'll own them for a fifth time (theatrical DVD->extended DVD->theatrical Blu-ray->extended Blu-ray->UHD Special Edition). In that scenario, might as well toss in the original VFX verions on UHD for the purists that don't want tampered VFX, then everyone is happy. |

Uh, it really doesn't. Most effects are done in 2k even today. Older movies than these have gotten 4k remasters without CG changes. It's fine.
Assuming it was Star Trek TNG mentioned before, that was a whole separate deal because the show was edited and finalized on SD video tape. That's why they had to redo the effects. |

Blu-ray, it took a surprising amount of time for LOTR to hit the format. And it was theatrical only first, for about a year. The POTTER series got a super early release (including HD DVD during the format war). Seems to be the same with 4k. I'm sure we'll see another re-issue of the Potter series before RINGS. --- On the subject of the effects, most of them would look just fine still. There are a few that I think they could touch up as far as lighting/color. Early 2000s means there are some creatures or CG characters that just don't look like they're colored or lit correctly for the scene they're in. |

Improving the color/lighting on a handful of CG FX is hardly "changing the movie to be modern".

Not really, no. Redoing the effects entirely would be, sure. Adding in, swapping out things with more modern items or images would be.
But yeah...sure. So how many of you are going to be throwing out the movies in your collections that have had color corrections/timing done? As well as minor tweaks to remove visible strings or correct/adjust framing? |

It would be cool if non-effects shots were rescanned at 4K from the Super-35 negatives for any future UHD release. As I recall, something like 30% of THE FELLOWSHIP OF THE RING consisted of shots with no CGI at all. Not sure what the percentage might be on the other 2 films, but those sweeping aerial shots of the New Zealand landscapes etc. would look great in true 4K.

The only problem I had with the effects in these films is that Gollum looked a little jarring when he showed up on screen in TT HD, just because he looked like a cel pasted into shot. His actual performance was great, the edges were just a little too sharp, maybe because I was used to DVD. As the film went on, I got used to it, and I didn't notice it in RoK.
