That's really all we know so far, right? Any idea what the "bonus content" is?

Would be surprised if it's anything substantial. Off the top of my head, the Zoom cast reunion for LOTR seems plausible, and perhaps In Memoriam featurettes for Ian Holm and Christopher Lee. (IIRC the Five Armies EE already has one for Andrew Lesnie.)

I would really love to see a more in-depth documentary/technical study of how the remaster was accomplished and Peter Jackson's involvement.

I still don't understand the difference between the Winter 2020 release and the Fall 2021 release. Is the Fall 2021 release just a cheaper "bare-bones" release with zero special features? What does "newly-remastered" mean? Certainly they'll use the same encodings as the Winter 2020 and Summer 2021 releases. Right?

I'd like to point out that Bill Hunt claims WB has said that the bonus content will be a disc's worth but that no old bonus content- including the appendices- will be included. That's kind of a deal-breaker for me, so I did pick up the bare-bones new releases. I'll sell them off, if the new set seems like it offers anything substantial.

Oh, wow! I missed this. That would mean the no more green tint on the blurays of Fellowship extended. They really did think of everything.

What the actual f**k?

The Appendices of the Middle-Earth films are some of the most exhaustive and in-depth special features ever for home video releases. How the bloody hell does the definitive physical release (remastered UHD) not include them? So I'm going to have to keep those discs from an older set, and Frankenstein together some kind of custom packaging to hold it all?

Well, if history has taught us anything it's that Bill Hunt's predictions are always 100% accurate. Now if you'll excuse me, I'll be enjoying my Lord of the Rings films which, as you no doubt know are "new 4K scans of original camera negative and new 4K scans of the original VFX film outs."

Watched Fellowship Extended again today. Had no problem with the color timing.

A DTS 6.1 track like this... On a 7.1 system, would the single rear channel just go to both rear speakers?

Just live happily ever after for fux sake. They all kinda sorta (wanted to) at the end of The Hobbit.

I'm currently in the process of watching all the bonus features. Some of which I've not viewed since the release of the dvds!

So for me who never bought them, would it be better to get the older bd set for the special features, and the 4k set for the movies themselves and be done....or wait and see if the super-sized set actually does include the special features?

Waiting on information is ALWAYS the best bet.

It would depend on the cost of the super-sized set for me; plus if a newly remastered bluray set retains the appendices I'd prefer that to the existing set - the removal of green tint in the first movie is reason enough alone. Honestly, going through the UHD 4K set now (tonight it's Return of the King) I don't expect to watch the bluray set again any time soon - the UHD 4K's are fabulous and superceding for me! It also depends on how relevant the bonus material is to you - I've had the bluray set for a few years now and have yet to view any of it (it's just nice to know I have it) and this was the same for the DVD set as well. As with any sets I've upgraded I may give the movie discs to family/friends but will definitely retain the appendices discs whatever the case. My original plan when obtaining the UHD 4K sets was to replace the bluray movie discs with the UHD 4K discs, but since the newer set comes in a compact 25mm case, I prefer it on the rack as it saves considerable space, with the old set consigned to closet/basement storage. Finally, I prefer the extended versions to the theatrical so those included discs are not that useful for me - if WB ever offers the UHD 4K extended movies with the bluray appendices that would be the set I would want to have.

All good points. I'd just be buying the bluray set for the special features disc's, and use the 4K set for actual viewing.

No it's not normal. The cases are all supposed to be black Blu-ray cases. Looks like they ran out and used 4K cases instead.

My copy of Interstellar 4K came in a blue Blu-ray case, also bought from Best Buy. The discs, digital copy, cover art, and slipcover were all correct -- but it was in a Blu-ray case. Oh well.

Before we freak out, I believe it was confirmed ALL bonus features (including the Appendices) have since been shuffled over onto the digital edition.

To be clear, the post you were referring to was 100% sarcasm. My point was that Mr. Hunt's "scoops" aren't always accurate. For you to make an informed decision, you would need to know exactly what will or won't be on the upcoming edition. I would certainly advise anyone who wants to have the current BD extras on hand to keep them for the time being. Unfortunately, at the moment there is simply a great deal that we don't know.

I only ask bc i know alot of collectors editions have been ruined by not having special features from previous ones. In cases of new ownership i can actually see that, sort of, but when the same company has it. For example, Empire of Dreams.
