I think also it has to do with not being able to be killed. Cause how his body was destroyed the ring wasn’t at the time so he was able to not be truly killed. Kind of like Voldemort and his Horcruxes. He can’t truly die unless the ring is destroyed.

In battle, sure. But the real advantage of the power of the ring - the reason he made it - is that the ring controls all the other rings of power. The ones he gave to the nine kings, the elves and the dwarves. There's an element of deception to it. He basically tricked them all into becoming his puppets. Presumably, he didn't have the power to force his will on everybody and the rings was a sneaky way of doing it.

My recollection from the reading the novel and some of the backstory is that Sauron essentially pulled a Devil move and appeared to the Elves as an "angel of light" type scenario and tricked them into sharing their knowledge and ability of ring making. In order to make the One Ring so powerful, Sauron essentially poured some of his "life force" into the ring. Benefit: it's hella powerful. Con: it means his life force is bound to the physical existence of the ring. Plus, it's a great plot point: it means the ring must be destroyed in the place it was forged to destroy both the ring and the life force bound to it. Sure, it's make believe, but it's a interesting and fascinating concept.

FOTR Monologue....
Galadriel: (speaking partly in Elvish) (I amar prestar aen.) The world is changed. (Han matho ne nen.) I feel it in the water. (Han mathon ned cae.) I feel it in the earth. (A han noston ned gwilith.) I smell it in the air. Much that once was is lost, for none now live who remember it. It began with the forging of the Great Rings. Three were given to the Elves, immortal, wisest and fairest of all beings. Seven to the Dwarf-Lords, great miners and craftsmen of the mountain halls. And nine, nine rings were gifted to the race of Men, who above all else desire power. For within these rings was bound the strength and the will to govern each race. But they were all of them deceived, for another ring was made. Deep in the land of Mordor, in the Fires of Mount Doom, the Dark Lord Sauron forged a master ring, and into this ring he poured his cruelty, his malice and his will to dominate all life. One ring to rule them all. One by one, the free lands of Middle-Earth fell to the power of the Ring, but there were some who resisted. A last alliance of men and elves marched against the armies of Mordor, and on the very slopes of Mount Doom, they fought for the freedom of Middle-Earth. Victory was near, but the power of the ring could not be undone. It was in this moment, when all hope had faded, that Isildur, son of the king, took up his father’s sword. Sauron, enemy of the free peoples of Middle-Earth, was defeated. The Ring passed to Isildur, who had this one chance to destroy evil forever, but the hearts of men are easily corrupted. And the ring of power has a will of its own. It betrayed Isildur, to his death. And some things that should not have been forgotten were lost. History became legend. Legend became myth. And for two and a half thousand years, the ring passed out of all knowledge. Until, when chance came, it ensnared another bearer. It came to the creature Gollum, who took it deep into the tunnels of the Misty Mountains. And there it consumed him. The ring gave to Gollum unnatural long life. For five hundred years it poisoned his mind, and in the gloom of Gollum’s cave, it waited. Darkness crept back into the forests of the world. Rumor grew of a shadow in the East, whispers of a nameless fear, and the Ring of Power perceived its time had come. It abandoned Gollum, but then something happened that the Ring did not intend. It was picked up by the most unlikely creature imaginable: a hobbit, Bilbo Baggins, of the Shire. For the time will soon come when hobbits will shape the fortunes of all. |

Right? And I mean what is the mechanism behind which Superman flies? How does he fight against the force of gravity? How does he propel and stop himself? There is no acceptable explanation except a purely scientific one that falls in line with the natural laws of physics. Explain it now.

I think the underlying question here is "how does a little piece of metal control other little pieces of metal, in turn controlling the wearer?". Well, we are talking about a world of elves, dwarves, wizards, and dragons, so conventional logic might be a wee bit misplaced here. I think an earlier poster drew the parallel with Harry Potter's Horcruxes (sp?), which I think does have some merit (though, to mention "Harry Potter" and "The Lord of the Rings" in the same sentence is blasphemy, IMO). The power of The One Ring is no different than any number of fantasy tropes common to the fantasy genre. At the end of the day, this falls squarely into the category of "Don't criticize Bugs Bunny because rabbits don't talk... just sit back and enjoy it". To illustrate a point, yes. Are you being serious in this thread? It's just a story man, relax.
