As for price, Apple has become far more of a consumer electronics company than an esoteric brand, so you wouldn't think they'd bother unless they could get the price down.

Time will tell...
Reminds me, after just reading Sap’s last post with his last Signature item, i.e. "Next purchase".

Cinema sound is finally getting some formal dedicated attention in regards to standards…meaning SMPTE has fairly recently established a committee formally dedicated to cinema sound for the first time in over 30 years. Zoe, since you’re also a Cinema-type guy, you might be interested in this newly produced videoclip. It starts out with basic nomenclature like the ‘A’ and ‘B chains’ and goes on from there touching on things like the highlights of the new immersive sound systems, e.g. Auro 3D, Atmos, etc.

B.T.W., regarding the Auro 3D system, something not mentioned in the clip is the actual DCP mechanics involved. Namely, the Auro system encodes the 11.1 into a standard 5.1, as current DCP spec. carries the usual 6 channels. The projector systems will play 5.1 in plain old standard theaters and if the venue does happen to have an Auro decoder, then it will play the 11.1 from the same files.

Anyway, good listening for bedtime, at least….

You dawg! I see in your Signature that you’ve already got a new home theater purchase on the horizon. Tax refund expected?

Well, many believe (including me) that the cost of his video and audio calibration package combined is not only worth it but, quite reasonable. So, if anyone out there reading is in the market for a solid home theater calibration, you can’t go wrong with Jeff either in terms of his expertise or pricing. And you don't really need a *home theater* per se to take advantage...you just have to be a serious enthusiast with even a half decent TV and sound system.

Anyway, J.M. has a great eye because, over the years, he’s seen so many brands and types of consumer TVs and like you said his personal testimonial is extremely valuable but, the most scientific evaluation will be for potential buyers (if they have access to the means) to compare one of these XBR-84X900’s at your local retailer playing native 4K content in a side-by-side setting to a 1080p display showing the exact same content but, in 1080 rez, like a current Blu-ray, for instance.

That’ll be the proof of the pudding.

If i ever do get a calibration it's going to be either him or D-Nice.

(I'm sure you've heard of him?)

But for now i'm going to unlock the ISF modes on my kuro with controcal.

1080p vs native 4K side by side is the comparison i can't wait to do. Current 4K demos don't really blow me away. But maby i need to see the same source in 1080p to see just how much of a difference is truly there.

You really need to calibrate the Sony 4K before making comparisons. It was not good at factory defaults.

The benefit of 1080p upscaled to 4K was not minor either.

I don’t know him personally but yes, I’ve heard that he is a solid calibrator also.

No self-promotion.
Since you won’t promote yourself, then I will . For folks who may be unaware, “umr” is Jeff M., the calibrator about whom we’ve been referring to and the author of this review… http://homecinemaguru.com/?p=3655

And since Jeff does no self promotion in his Signature for the time being, I’ll chime in that rumor has it his eyes and mind are not only good enough to count the stars when you move your cursor to the center of the star field but, even if you place your cursor in the far corners of the image here… http://www.chiptune.com/starfield/starfield.html

Welcome Jeff .

Thanks. I do have 20-10 vision.

I have to say I thought I would skip 4K, but if we get enough content and some good 4K projectors at a reasonable price I will likely upgrade from my Sim2 2K rig.

Hey.

Your right that it needs calibration. Besides resolution everything else is better on my pioneer from what i've seen. It's the reason why i think you can improve other things related to PQ and get huge benefits. 4K resolution is good though. I saw a Skyfall trailer on the sony and the increase in detail and sharpness was noticeable. I don't know if it was native or upscaled but it looked very good. I really want to try different movies on it but the sony store in NY still doesn't have a BD player hooked up.

What did you get for measured black level on the 84X900? Both full field and ANSI.

Also, did you get a chance to test the new samsung F8500? I think the ZT60 will be the better TV based of current reports.

Not that i'm looking to buy a new TV. I'm waiting for 4K OLED for a true upgrade.

Are you suppose to be able to see the individual stars while they're moving?

Be careful about OLED. I used to work for an OLED manufacturer and we had huge panel reliability problems. I would wait for years worth of data to prove UV light is not causing panel failures.

When I calibrate a product I am not there to take performance measurements like ANSI contrast and on/off contrast that have nothing to do with my work. The room was also too bright to take those measurements. People rely too much on metrics as well. What really matters is how a product performs as a unit and not a few measurements. I see a lot if product and no flat panel I have seen touches the 84" 4K Sony in the situation I saw it.

I have not worked on the new Samsung or Panasonic. I suspect they will each have their flaws. What someone prefers will vary.

I am just going to stick with streaming. Can't be bothered to wait for 4k. If my bluray collection is obsolete soon I can't be bothered to collect again. Streaming, here I come!

Not really…nor, for that matter, do I think it is to be used as an illustration of the ambient luminance level of starlight, which is about 10^−4 in cd/m² illumination units, if I recall. Which in a roundabout fashion leads us to the topic of the steady state dynamic range of the human visual system….which far exceeds the parameters of current commercial displays…which leads us back to the subject of the great benefit of future HDR displays. I’ll have to post a pic of a horizontal bar graph as a visual aid of the concepts when I get more time.

Anyway, my colleagues occasionally email me imagery material like that. In that particular instance, it was a joke and I think I was “supposed” to feel like I was outside enjoying a clear cloudless night, when the reality was that they knew I was stuck in an office surrounded by four walls and a ceiling.

The same person also sent me this….http://www.ritsumei.ac.jp/~akitaoka/index-e.html

Warning [and this is no April Fools joke, for that matter, nothing I post today is]
Some categories like for instance Movie Illusion 10, etc. could possibly induce harmful side effects like dizziness and even seizures in some highly susceptible individuals. If you start feeling unwell when viewing some of the images in the above website, immediately cover one eye with your hand and then leave the page. Do not close both your eyes because that could make the symptoms worse.
