Ok started watching the TT edition watched it up until it gets to night time. And they have the whole transition to nighttime so that darkening of the image that occurs previously is really a waste of time IMO

Then I started watching the Umbrellla edition from the beginning. I kept thinking ok I like the brighter sunshine look however as I kept watching it I noticed something I never noticed with the TT edition. That is the Umbrella has a slight smear or texture on top of the image you can see it clearly with facial closeups and camera movements. It’s annoying ....

I prefer the TT only because I don’t have to look at that strange smeary texture on top of the image. I didn’t mind the white speckles over the Umbrella but the TT even with the color timing the transfer is very impressive filmic look.

Just my thoughts the Umbrella isn’t bad for the price I got a copy on amazon for about 14.99 new sealed thru prime. So it’s a good option for those who want to own a copy.

sticking to the TT until a better edition ever gets released.
Thank you! I recently checked out the Umbrella edition and thought it looked far worse than either the TT edition or the unauthorized edition that's floating around. That smeary mess was immediately apparent to me and totally ruined the film for me. It's obviously better than nothing but like you, I am still hoping for another corrected release directly from Sony themselves here in the states.

Why isn’t the Umbrella version listed on the site? Can’t add it to my collection list, this isn’t good for OCD.

Although I’m still fairly new to the forums, I’m beginning to notice people’s preferences about what is posted. There’s those that go by technical side & know what they are talking as far as audio & visual qualities. I tend to take those seriously. Then of course there are those who just go by personal preference & post about things like price or too much grain or the ratios, that they expect perfection because they have a fancy set up at home. I take those with a grain of salt. I myself personally believe any new release should look crisp & near perfect. As far as older titles I don’t fully expect the quality to be perfect. I’m also willing to admit I’m not as familiar with the audio & visual aspects of blu ray & UHD. Just an observation I have noticed.

Maybe with a starting trend of some TT Titles going to Kino, this may follow suite one day.

I owned the TT disc for a couple years and I couldn't stand the overly dark look especially in broad daylight. When I get the AU disc I thought it was a revelation.

Yeah the Aussie disc has issues but at least it looks like the right movie.

That one rules and I don't feel bad for saying it. If a couple of movie fans can do work like that when major studios can't, then studios deserve whatever they get!
Before I get suspended can I say I did buy and still have the TT disc, although also being a previous dvd owner, I was among those who demanded a better version (but did not return my TT disc in case) as that TT was such a let down, esp. coming after the strong Fright Night disc they released.

TT has always been entirely dependent on the masters they get from the studio. In both cases the master came from Sony. From the info gathered by people on this thread, Sony consulted the DoP over the phone with respect to grading the master and did not bother to invite him or send any samples for his approval. Even the director Tom Savini played down revisionism arguments saying that the blu looked fine to him. That way, they would have little case to go to Sony to demand a re-graded master. At least they gave people the option of returning their discs for a replacement, which is more than what people who bought the first release of Fox's French Connection disc got.

Does anyone know what print version is sold on Vudu/iTunes? I was looking to maybe buy it on there but don't care to pay that much for a mediocre print.

...but no confirmation yet on whether it will use the Twilight Time's color grading, or the Australian release's color timing.

I really hope Sony has done a new scan for this release.

Surely SONY will have a new scan and not use that blue tinted mess. There was enough backlash from that to where I honestly don't believe they will use that.

Dollars to donuts its the same blue mess... They dont think there's anything wrong with it, after all it was "supervised by the DP"....

There is no need for them to do a new scan. The effort has to be in color grading of the already scanned material. If they have taken into account the backlash during the TT release, they could consider actually calling in the DoP for a personal supervision or mailing a relevant image / screener clip to get his approval.

Couldn't they just remove the tint? The transfer itself is fine. At least I think so.

In addition to the incorrect (and horrendous) color timing on the Twilight Time, it is also missing sound effects, ranging from the click of an empty rifle to the camera sound during the end credits.

The Umbrella transfer may be dated, but it is the correct color/sound, and in hidef.
