Today’s 4K analysis after the match by a SKY spokesman “I've seen the future of sport on TV and it's not only bright, it's also pin sharp”… http://news.sky.com/story/1135574/ul...tv-coming-soon

Tob, I just returned from our ‘morning’ (which extended into the afternoon because we rode so slow due to the heat) ride. Starting to watch the Arsenal match which I recorded. Later.

P.S.
Steed, we saw 2 rattlers today. I'll have to grab a pic for you one day when I remember to carry my compact camera in my jersey.

Keeping close eye on 4k developments. I don't pretend to understand all the tech talk, but as a pure consumer, colour me excited

New readers who don’t understand the technology (as well as *seasoned 4K video journalists who love to refer to ITU-R BT.2020 in their 4K analysis articles should take the time to view the YouTube clip which I posted on the last page ( https://forum.blu-ray.com/showthread...ow#post8058695 ), esp. since David led the ITU-R group that agreed to that particular standard, BT.2020. I mean who better to listen to than the father of the progeny.

Indeed Steed, it is no doubt exciting times in display technology if you are into home theater. I expect the next great milestone to be going from prototype 4K OLEDs to consumer available panels in that rez. Then we can all look forward to a long period of time during which bloggers will b*tch about the high prices of those early 4K OLED models and tell us why they won’t be spending their money on such a purchase.

Until then, expect a round of b*tching from the gurus about the limitations of HDMI 2.0.

Ho-ly mo-ley. It’s alive. It’s ALIVE. An anonymous member who works in the motion picture business just informed me that after his reading of my retrospective look-back in the links about free test signals and a blonde model here…https://forum.blu-ray.com/showthread...es#post7973904

that when he checked out the Insider’s Forum, he noticed that Club Penton https://forum.blu-ray.com/forumdisplay.php?f=61

had blasted through the 2˝ million mark and even surpassed 2ľ million despite being in a dormant posting period.

P.S. And personally, a greater way to top off my Labor Day is with news of greater millions, well invested -

Tob, there is hope for us to be a competitive force in the Prem this year.

Well, for owners of the puck, the day is now. Those 4K feature film downloads didn’t take up nearly the amount of space you thought they would, did they?

An entire movie at 4K resolution is only 90 GB? That must look pretty macro-blocky!

Hi singhcr , hope you had a good summer holiday. To your comment, at first thought, one might think so but, since JPEG 2000 does not use a block structure like some other well known codecs, blocking artifacts should not be a problem. Whereas, the critical data rate at which softening artifacts become visible is dependent upon the nature and technical details of the source images.

b.t.w., the Video Unlimited service for the puck ( http://www.engadget.com/2013/04/07/s...ution-service/ ) has quietly launched (this past weekend) and there are a host of other 4K feature films available now (for rent or purchase) rather than only the well-publicized 10 pre-loaded freebie feature films. Still think you need those 300GB discs that video journalists jumped on? Riiiiight. As I said above, owners should check out the typical file sizes of the 4K feature films.

I think even detractors will consider it to be not a bad 4K movie rollout if they’re open-minded....given this is just the beginning.

It has not been announced yet but PS4 will have access to this service also.

Is there any way to see what movies are available? Anyone have a list?

From the full press release, at the above link:
This summer, consumers of Sony's 4K UHD TVs can purchase the FMP-X1 4K Media Player bundled with 10 feature films and video shorts in true 4K resolution for $699. In the fall of 2013, users of the same 4K Media Player will be given access to a fee-based video distribution service offering a library of 4K titles from Sony Pictures Entertainment and other notable production houses. The feature films included with purchase of the 4K Media Player are Bad Teacher, Battle: Los Angeles, The Bridge on the River Kwai, The Karate Kid (2010), Salt, Taxi Driver, That's My Boy, The Amazing Spider-Man, The Other Guys and Total Recall (2012).

With a variety of options already available for the home theater, only Sony can bring true 4K content to consumers. ...
It's good that 55 and 65 inch 4K displays are getting more reasonable, pricewise ($4999 and $6999, respectively). I think anything over 32 inches will look better with the greater pixel density of 4K. It will reduce or eliminate the screen-door effect.

No I mean the movies that just got released through Video Unlimited, not the ones preloaded on the server.

That's good to know, thanks for the info.

My summer was mainly work related this year as I was starting a new job and had to relocate to Winnipeg from Minnesota for a time, but I got plenty of soccer games in and trips up to Duluth to do some hiking. Next week hunting season starts so I'm looking forward to some pan fried squirrel.

you will need a lot bigger than 32 inch TV to see any difference with 4K

that is already been proven; even these 55-60 inch tv's are too small to really get a difference

it needs to be much bigger AND you have to be close to get the benefit
