b.t.w. – to any aspiring DI colorists out there reading/watching, this ^ method works best for him (Juan) when using Resolve. Don’t consider it to be any defacto standard guideline as to the best method for use on all color grading systems.

With Labor Day weekend fast approaching, might I pass on a bit of advice to those 4K impulse buyers amongst us (especially those who didn’t appreciate my hint from 5 days ago on 8/26 located here - https://forum.blu-ray.com/showthread...mi#post8033648 ).
Anyway, like the Professor says…”If you're someone who tends to overspend, or you're kind of an extreme person, then maybe you ought to consider shopping in high heels” - http://www.dailymail.co.uk/sciencete...-spending.html Hey, thank the vestibular system in the petrous portion of your temporal bones. I only ask that you wear Sergio Rossi ![]() ![]() |

From a recent LA Times article about what drive-in theaters are faced with:
Hollywood is expected to stop distributing 35-millimeter film prints to all U.S. theaters later this year. The vast majority of indoor theaters — hardtops, in drive-in lingo — have already converted to digital projectors, but 90% of drive-ins have not, according to an industry trade group. Conversion costs of $70,000 or more per screen could be too expensive for many drive-ins.http://articles.latimes.com/2013/jan...gital-20130120 Sidney Lumet went digital for 2007's Before the Devil Knows You're Dead. In the Blu-ray's supplements, he talks about why digital is superior (from a filmmakers perspective). He was an old guy in '07, too, and no Luddite. Last edited by joie; 08-30-2013 at 09:31 PM. It must of been so superior as he never shot a movie again after that movie. Then he bites the bullet...

![]() Shows they’re not shooting on film…or else they could quickly confirm something which is pretty much common celluloid processing knowledge. My advice, if they have any, send their o-neg to FotoKem and unless they’re preparing themselves to teach the History of Cinema at some local community college, instead of spending their time thinking and writing about photochemical workflows, Technicolor and film processing, that they learn something a little more practical like the benefits of Technicolor DP Lights or FrameLogic. Anyway, have a safe holiday weekend. Sap, you know I luv ya ![]() |

Much is old hat for dedicated long term readers of this thread except perhaps for those who thought that 22.2 multichannel audio required speakers situated all over your home theater (like in a commercial theater). Not necessarily, as there is a more friendly solution, see the clip around the 3 min. mark (b.t.w. don’t discount the technical acumen of the fellow presenting due to his tie, because, for those unaware, the man is no technical slouch ![]() http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LAVTX...ature=youtu.be |

Took me a little while to find an article that I felt you could understand as to the relevance of learning about more modern workflows in this day-and-age for active filmmakers, esp. DPs. Try to open a new window, copy and post this pdf link….technicolor.com/download/file/fid/4142
as you probably can’t link to it directly. Make sure you add www. to the beginning of the link. Additionally, I “meant” that Technicolor Hollywood no longer processes negative – they should try FotoKem if indeed they (or anyone else in the L.A. area) still shoot film....and in some parts of the world, there are no film labs left, period. Ergo, like reminiscing about dinosaurs. |

Don’t feel sorry as it’s not your fault. The thread started about two years ago, when there was little or any recognition of ‘4K movie releases’ by the general public or the membership-at-large based upon a link with entries which was woefully incomplete (and in some cases, incorrect). Since then, it has evolved more or less into a *multi-purpose greater than 1080p resolution thread* with a basic infrastructure related to 4K. Sometimes we may go a little off-topic but, I think no more than the typical chit-chat off-topic in other threads on all A/V forums and certainly not full of inaccurate information, posted as fact, or 2 cent speculative noise.
In fairness, I doubt there is any other single resource thread anywhere on the internet which accurately includes a more comprehensive collection of information on ‘4K movies’ related to their encoding, distribution (even with exact file sizes) or projection; although there are nuggets scattered about in other threads, for instance, like 4 in a row starting here…https://forum.blu-ray.com/showthread...ed#post7545949 It is what it is. In fact, someday when I get the time I plan on discussing why people older than about 60 years old don’t see as well as younger folks, despite each age group having the same visual acuity by Snellen (20/20 or better). So, if any are having trouble with the *tangents* in this thread and haven’t departed by now for more authoritative ‘4K movie release’ threads, I would most assuredly leave when I do a random post on reduced sampling efficiency causing degraded hyperacuity in our senior membership....or else close your eyes. |

Context…Sean (McCarthy, Ph.D) at the ‘Display Technologies of the Future’ panel from the recent NAB2013 ( http://nab13.mapyourshow.com/5_0/ses...ssionID=1AAAC7 ) very briefly basically describes the part of the human visual system to which I refer (and its application to 4K viewing by consumers), at about the 38 min. mark here…
