It’s a family reunion between “Succession” producer Adam McKay and series director Mark Mylod as Searchlight is in negotiations with Mylod to direct “The Menu” with McKay producing the dark comedy.

McKay will produce through his Hyperobject Industries banner and will be joined by his partner Betsy Koch to produce.

The film is a darkly comedic psychological thriller set in the world of eccentric culinary culture, centering on a young couple who visit an exclusive restaurant on a remote island where an acclaimed chef has prepared a lavish tasting menu.

Will Tracy and Seth Reiss penned the script. DanTram Nguyen, Searchlight’s SVP of Production and Searchlight’s director of production Zahra Phillips will oversee for the studio.

The film originally had Alexander Payne to direct and Emma Stone to star but scheduling conflicts led to all parties having to leave the project. This left the door open for Mylod to join his fellow “Succession” team members on the film following the critically acclaimed second season of the show which saw the series gain a bigger audience and acclaim.

Mylod helmed four episodes from the past season alone. He cut his teeth directing several episodes for “Shameless,” and the film marks his first big studio pic since Fox’s “What’s Your Number.” source

Well, Payne is usually pretty solid. And I do like horror/comedy usually, so this has me fairly interested off the bat.

Alexander Payne is right up there with Paul Thomas Anderson and Quentin Tarantino for me.

Day 1, no questions asked, don't care what the film is about or who is in it. I'm there no matter what.

I enjoyed Downsizing. It could've been funnier, and it was nowhere near one of Payne's best works, but I don't think it was a bad film by any stretch of the imagination. I'll be awaiting this new project with confidence in the filmmaker.

EXCLUSIVE: The hot project du jour: The Menu, a dark satirical comedy that Alexander Payne will direct. So far, Emma Stone and Ralph Fiennes have signed on to star, and it’s anticipated that other swell names will enlist.

Scripted by Will Tracy & Beth Reiss, the pic focuses on an eccentric culinary event that is planned for an exclusive island and becomes the hot ticket to die for. I’ve heard it referred to as a Tarantino-esque take on The One-Percent. Fiennes plays the world-class chef who sets it all up and adds some unexpected ingredients to the menu planned. The action follows one particular A-list couple that takes part. I’ve heard Stone will play half of that couple.

The picture is produced by Gary Sanchez, who have a first look at Paramount. I reported Saturday that Gary Sanchez principals Will Ferrell and Adam McKay are splitting, but that script is into Paramount now, and that studio has a week or so to furnish a proposal. After that, Gary Sanchez can shop the project wide. Like Payne’s great films The Descendants and Nebraska, the budget here is smallish but there will be profit participation as part of the package. First step is to see if Paramount steps up, after which it will be a free for all, based on the buzz I am hearing.

I vaguely remember reading this script like 3 years ago when it was around the Black List and thought it was pretty good at the time. I'm down to watch it. Talent is good, although I hope ATJ doesn't burn herself out. I know she's got like 4 projects shooting in rapid succession coming up.
