Yeah, it's one of the few that still hasn't been scored and it's been out 8 months.

I sampled some of this yesterday on the ZD9 and I stand by what I said before 100% that it simply doesn't have a lot of extension into the highlights in HDR. There are certainly dabs of it here and there but nothing incredibly expansive. However, where it spanks the Blu-ray quite handily re: extended range is at the lower end because the gamma on the Blu is very very high, it loses a ton of shadow detail to black crush whereas the UHD reveals loads more detail in the darker areas of the image.
Don't get me wrongo, this is still A-grade eye candy as I'm not saying that the highlights aren't plenty bright, the speculars look unreal, and the colour - which is no slouch on the regular Blu - has even more richness and definition to it. Combine that with the vast expansion into the lowlights and this is a cracking upgrade and a demo-worthy piece of UHD software. |

I'm rewatching ALL my UHD BD's as a month ago I got a new Samsung 4K set with HDR, my previous Philips set didn't have HDR, and watching movies on HDR on a T.V.set with a good panel is a whole new experience.

I also have some settings that I locked in last week for just regular blurays when I got my hands on a copy of Apocalypto (there was something really wrong with it, lots of motion judder and soap opera effect by default... had to experiment with HDR+ and Clear Motion, turn off DC and Smart LED etc), and now I'm getting some incredible picture quality in every BD movie I haven't seen in a long time. I feel like I wasted the last 6 months of my life and need to rewatch everything ![]() ...but yeah, I like to wait until I've forgotten the movies just a little bit before I rewatch most of them. |

Same with me, both the 3d and 4k look great so I alternate which version I want to watch.

Mastered with 4000-nit metadata BUT you'd have to have one of zmarty's spectral analyses in order to determine what's actually being hit, e.g. Lego Movie is a 4000-nit encode but the actual highlights peak at 2150-ish nits IIRC.

So my OG Samsung 4K player bit the dust. Happily, had the protection plan and Best Buy cashed me out with an in-store credit for what I paid for it. Since the newer Samsung player lacks the 2nd HDMI out, and the older Samsung player is showing reliability issues, I opted to try the Sony UBP-X800. Ended up being cheaper than the Samsung, too.
Now, the bad news. Tried Pacific Rim in it (after watching probably two dozen other movies), and the movie glitches... BAD. I never had these issues on the Samsung, so I'd like to think it's the player. But then I tried some other triple layer discs (Batman v Superman) and it played flawlessly through the entire movie. I'd like to think I could just exchange the disc, but I bought it long ago (within a week of street date). Think the retailer would do an exchange this far out of policy, or am I stuck trying to get Warner to exchange it? Anyone else have glitch issues with this disc on the Sony player? |

So I finally bit the bullet and ordered this on Vudu to check out the Dolby Vision as I have a Samsumg K8500, but an LG E6 so it does the Dolby Vision. I need to compare. Next to Planet Earth 2, this was the 2nd time since I've made the 4K upgrade I've been genuinely blown away by a presentation. Now, having not watched this on disc yet, I can't to compare it the physical release, but briefly reading this thread it seems like the disc is phenomenal as well. I may have to grab the UHD disc when it goes on sale just to compare as the praise for this release has been pretty unanimous.

Went in with my old Pacific Rim disc and they had the Sony X800 setup with the Sony A1E on a demo. Tried the Pacific Rim disc I brought with me, sure enough it glitched on their set up as well. Even though I was well out of return period, they let me swap it with another disc off the shelf, and that one plays perfectly. Still strange that I didn't have an issue until I moved from the Samsung 4K player to the Sony, but, at least I'm not out $30+. :P |

Wow this truly lives up to it's reputation, glorious PQ
when I first played it, my player didn't detect the HDR (never happened before) so I was worried I got a defected disc, but the trusty 'turn off and back on' fixed that) Last edited by Talal86; 07-13-2017 at 09:42 AM. |
