"Umbrellas of Cherbourg" should look unreal (literally).
Also: "West Side Story" "Swing Time" (Astaire and Rogers) "An American in Paris" "The Band Wagon" "Singin' in the Rain" "Oklahoma" (road show version) "Cabaret" "All That Jazz" "A Star Is Born" "Show Boat" (1951) |

Made it all the way to page three, and nobody mentioned some VERY obvious ones.....
Pink Floyd, The Wall The Doors (not entirely sure you'd call this one a musical though, more like a movie with a lot of music.....) Tommy Yellow Submarine (can't stress the need for this on Blu enough..... Blue-Meanies in Blu ?? C'MON!!!!) Help! |

Definitely The Wizard of Oz.
But it is SO OLD it might look like an "oldray" standard DVD when it comes out on Blu. My goodness, it wasn't even recorded in STEREO, but I do believe it was remixed or processed into 5.1 surround (can anyone confirm?). ![]() |

![]() Knew I forgot some, also "Hair". Treat Williams and John Savage were surprisingly good. Saw it being filmed way back when. Last edited by Quad; 03-14-2008 at 02:56 PM. Reason: addition |

So many of the cast are either dead now, or really, really old. Wonderfully colorful movie, though. The opening credits alone are quite stunning.
Nice that they were able to cast so many Asian-Americans in the production. My favorite song: "Love, look away." I even bought the soundtrack on CD. |

I'd also love to see some more obscure television musicals released on Blu.
The Great Waltz Bloomer Girl (with Babs Cook before she became a pretentious cow) High Tor (with Bing Crosby) Damn Yankees (with Lee Remick and Phil Silvers) Kismet (with a dreamy Jeannie) Wonderful Town Anything Goes (with Merm, Frank Sinatra and Bert Lahr) |

Fiddler on the Roof.
I saw a projected 35mm print of that film a few years back and it was incredile. The DVD is garbage next to the silky, sharp, high-resolution print. Hello Dolly was also a mind-blowing 70mm experience: the most 3-D and colorful film print I've ever seen. That's another DVD that looks (and sounds) like CRAP next to the film print. One important thing for musicals is that we not only get lossless, but also get *transparent* audio mastering... not some noise-filtered garbage like we got on Hello Dolly's DVD audio (all the highs are gone which were there on the laserdisc). Mary Poppins on DVD suffered a similar fate: no highs because the guys mastering the sound were idiots and filtered it all away to get rid of the smallest trace of tape hiss. Quote:
lots of straight guys enjoy musicals. And those of us who are gay (like me) don't dig folks on forums like this putting out the homophobia vibes. Last edited by DaViD Boulet; 03-14-2008 at 04:25 PM. |

p.s.
Have any of you guys checked out the "That's Entertainment" BD set? It's sort of like "musical porn"... gets you all worked up wanting to see your fav musicals in HD and then leaves you hanging. ![]() Some great HD clips of some great musicals in there. Some are properly mastered/restored and will make AMAZING demo material. The shots from GIGI in that set are stunningly detailed and 3-D. Wow. |

All I have to say is...if you're not into musicals, don't read the thread. That's why I skip over the action movie threads...totally not interested. |
