Disney ran right into a wall bringing the digital negative of Snow White to DVD...the digital negative was captured using software and computers that no longer existed only eight years after they spent $25 million on the 1993 restoration, and they had to scramble to find working models that could read the software, the digital negative was almost lost because technology had advanced so much, like loading a video game from 1993 on a 2001 windows platform. This is going to be an ongoing problem for archivists as the decades roll by -- BUT they're aware of it. My wife is a librarian and she makes sure to maintain at least one working machine particular to a certain type pf media for her archives -- microfiche, slides, laserdiscs, VHS tapes, etc.

I just hope we get the original trilogy, as they were seen theatrically, when released, and as they were presented on video, before the CGI etc. I don't mind visual effects that were a product of their time. I actually prefer them, they are educational and have a certain charm. I haven't scoured this thread, so I don't know if Disney is in talks to release the OT, but I really hope George Lucas's shitty revisionism will become a thing of the past. Then again, I really didn't mind the narration on Blade Runner. Bring on the originals, tired of hearing all this revised garbage talk about films that were essentially robbed from the fans. Ugly thing.

So she's presumably seen the restoration. Bully for her. Though I wouldn't take the "special effects old" to mean anything, as the average man (or woman or turnip or however you identify) on the street just looks at Star Wars and sees an old movie with old effects. Even the SE is 20 years old.

And she called Han 'Hans'. So much for all the people saying "I've never heard him called that before!". You have now.

I don't know what she's seen. Obviously it's something because it's too random. I can't believe it's just a coincidence.

Or she could probably be watching the special editions and not really know what she is looking at.

But these movies aren't shown in theaters. It really almost never happens. It's just strange.

Maybe Cher is such a huge Star Wars fan that she has original prints that she watches in her home theater. Or she downloaded the despecialized versions.

Sure, that's exactly what I meant with my not-very-well-explained post above.

The "theatre" bit is telling as it means she's not just watching the DVD in her bedroom. Films do sometimes have "family and friends" screenings or industry previews before they go out on wide release, so it's quite possible she's managed to finagle her way into some sort of preview for the restored version.

I've said for a while that if it doesn't get a limited theatrical run in May or June - even if it's just a couple of showcase cinemas in major cities - I'd be very surprised. Yes, the schedule is crowded at that time of year as it always is (which is why the 1997 SE debuted in January of that year) but I think most theaters will be able to find the room for a couple of showings at least. We'll see what we'll see.

The possibilities are either:

A) It's a private 35mm print that she just happened to watch with a friend.

B) It's just a random screening of the existing blu-ray with a friend, though I don't know why she'd be commenting on the special effects if that were the case.

C) It was a private screening of the new 4k edition, that may or may not be the UOT.

Only one answer:

Cher = Harmy

And she would have gotten away with it too if it weren't for you meddling kids!

She probably sings "If I Could Turn Back Time" when she's in the zone editing The Empire Strikes Back.
