If remasters of the SEs are what we get (if even that), sure, I'll take them. But then the question is, what versions would they be, '97 or '11?

Gotta be the 2011 versions. I don't see them going backwards unless they go ALL the way back.

Eh, so it's a "definitive" word on the subject but then they say they've "essentially" confirmed it by putting two and two together: SE reconformed neg + stored trims = no original version. Note also the "fairly official" bit at the end, that couldn't be more non-committal if they tried. From "definitive" to "essentially" to "fairly official" (bearing in mind one of these dudes is from Fox who have nothing to do with restoring SW, only releasing it), those are things that make me go hmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm.

If one were to scan the SE negative...and the stored trims...and merge them back together digitally then there's your original version right there. One could just as easily say that it IS happening on the basis of that information. What is it with Star Wars and clickbait nonsense?

Pablo Hidalgo also previously stated the 4K scan Rian Johnson said he saw was the special edition, but despite that I still had hopes after the latest rumor.

Even so, the actual Bits article is close to meaningless because it simply confirms what folks have been saying about the reconformed SE neg and the storage of the original trims, it doesn't confirm anything about what form the actual restored version is.

Didn't know that Hidalgo actually SAID that the 4K resto was the special edition though, that's more pertinent and newsworthy than all the "fairly official" clickbait and forums quarterbacks (ahem) put together. Thanks for that!

Ah well, the SE it shall be. Hopefully a Blu-ray (and maybe even a 4K Blu, heaven forfend) won't be too long in coming.

Given where we were as recently as a few years ago I'll definitely take arguing over whether a glass that was previously not only empty but dusty is now only half empty.

We’ve essentially confirmed that Disney’s current 4K scan of the film is the most recent revised version (essentially the latest “special edition”), not the original theatrical edition.
Pablo Hidlago made several tweets right after Rian Johnson spoke about seeing a 4K version of Star Wars while making Rogue One. He said the only scan was of the special editions.

How bad is some of that older CGI going to look in 4K?

Is it even possible to make a 4K version of TPM?

I know what you mean. That climactic battle with the blue bubble things in TPM looks rank. I can only imagine how it'll appear in 4K.

TPM was shot on film so should look the best of the prequels, dodgy CGI aside

But the Library of Congress here in Washington, D.C. has had the unaltered original trilogy in 4K for years

Weren't AotC and RotS shot digitally in 1080p? They can't even be made 4K can they?

Rodney you keep mentioning Rian Johnson but I think it was Gareth Edwards who went around talking about seeing it in 4K, unless Johnson talked about it separately.

That's a bit of a myth. Yes, it was shot on film but virtually every final frame was finished out in 2K owing to the sheer amount of VFX, this is why the Blu-ray was mastered directly from the 2K data files (well, after Lowry had their pass on it).

In other words, if it ever makes it to 4K then it'll be an upscale....just like Clones and Sith.

Heck, we've known since 2012 that Lowry worked on a 4K restoration of the trilogy, so that glass always had a bit of somethin' somethin' in it. Just depends whether it was gonna get topped up to the brim or left as it was. The latter is fine by me, in the face of the overcooked 2011 Blu-rays.

That it may well turn out to be true doesn't make it any less slapdash a piece of reporting, but then the Bits "sources" don't seem to run as deep as they did back in the day.

Contrary rumors are always easier to believe than positive ones when it comes to the Unaltered Original Trilogy.

I actually can handle the SE but I hate seeing Hayden at the end of ROTS.

Disney needs to release the UOT now. IMO, if they wait too long Star Wars fatigue will set in. Fatigue from the new trilogies and fatigue from the multiple SE re-releases that have come before it.

I know I'll get lambasted for this...but Star Wars isn't as vital to my life as it once was...

I'm not saying anything has changed, Hidalgo's tweet is all the proof I or you or anyone should need, and why it's not been picked up by the usual clickbaiters I have no idea (probably because it's actual proof, not "fairly official" conjecture). What I am saying is that the Bits seem more full of hot air than not these days.
