The reason being, some people think that Amazon is the end and and be all when it comes to sales stats. Remember that Amazon was offering Memento to go along with the PSP when it was on sale, but did it ever show up in the top 10 of Nielsen? I see Resident Evil made it this time. I am not sure Amazon actually reflects the reality of what is really selling. Anyone?
Premonition did not make the top 100 in Amazon. Not once!

I think Universal will need to see 80+ percent on a regular basis, which I believe will happen in December. And if it does, CES will be really interesting.

According to the Universal HD DVD person at the San Diego Comic-con, HD DVD is so much cheaper to encode and produce that selling just as little as they are, they are making more money than the sales of the Blu-ray discs are. Of course, this was from an HD DVD person relaying the information from another HD DVD person for Universal. Can't say that it is true. Maybe that is a question for Insiders Thread. Personally, I think it is a load of FUD.

The release of Casino Royale pushed them above 80%. Had Toshiba not had their firesale we'd probably not have dipped so far low. Notice the top discs on HD DVD are really key basic movies. That means a lot of new people coming in buying up movies they love. Blu-ray's sale numbers seem to come from a large pool of casual buyers.

Which means when big titles come out we simply blow them away because we have such a large pool to pull from. You'll see the same thing for 300 in the numbers in 2 weeks.

That doesn't surprise me since Uni titles are practically dvds at this point (Traffic anyone?). Just take the dvd version, add some contrast enhancement and grain reduction and you have your HD version. Be honest, how could anyone tell if Uni was releasing dvd's packaged as HD DVDs at this point?

Universal and Toshiba obviously have a "closed door" deal, in which Uni are being paid a sick amount of $ to stay exclusive. of course Toshiba will last as long as possible to hurt the Blu-Ray format, since they are the main holders of the DVD patents.

Uhm, I don't know about December. Sales of PS3 is pickin' up especially since some owners are worried about the 80GB doesn't have hardware BC and it'll be at US$599. So people are scurrying for the US$499 to avoid issues like that.

Of course once they snag those PS3s, they will want to redeem the 5 free BDs that goes with that. And that will get them hooked up to BD.

Basically, if we're seeing 75% this week, I think 80% is coming next month.

Default Blu-ray slaughtering HD DVD

Blu-Ray Slaughtering HD-DVD: 75% to 25%

Who says that this format war is still far from over? Nielsen VideoScan reports that tor the week ending July 22nd, Blu-Ray sales lead HD-DVD by an astonishing 74% to 26%. In other words, 3/4 of all high-definition movie sales were Blu-Ray discs. Amazing. Thus far, in 2007, Blu-Ray has widened the sales margin 67% to 33%.

Overall market share still has Blu-Ray leading by 20%, despite Blu-Ray having a late start, and initially hardware that was much more expensive than HD-DVD players. Blu-Ray holds 60% of the market share, with HD falling back even further, down to 40%. Thus far, a resurgence from Toshiba's format seems highly unlikely, as prices of Blu-Ray standalone players and the PlayStation 3 have dropped significantly recently.

Moreover, the top 10 best selling high-def. movies for the week ending July 22nd were almost all Blu-Ray format, with the exception of one. Also, a keen eye will notice Resident Evil: Apocalypse on the chart, that's largely because the movie was one of the 21 choices for five free Blu-Ray's offered with the PlayStation 3 as part of Amazon.com's promotion.

1. Premonition Blu-Ray 100.00
2. Casino Royale Blu-Ray 60.41
3. Planet Earth Blu-Ray 56.41
4. Pirates: Dead Man's Chest Blu-Ray 48.55
5. The Fifth Element Blu-Ray 45.24
6. Ghost Rider Blu-Ray 42.94
7. Planet Earth HD-DVD 39.62
8. Pirates: Curse of the Black Pearl Blu-Ray 39.39
9. Apocalypto Blu-Ray 39.87
10. Resident Evil Apocalypse Blu-Ray 31.79

Can someone refresh my memory please? What were the number of Blu-ray versus HD-DVD titles for the week that these results are for, and what exactly were the titles for each format?
