Even so you are forgetting how the doom 'n gloom crew was predicting a 70:30 HD-DVD landslide that week.

I think it is the Oprah effect in combination with Christmas shopping. It is a good no-brainer holiday gift since it can appeal to almost anyone, while people can be picky and unpredictable about normal movies.

Well she did feature it as on her extremely highly rated "Must Have X-Mas Gifts" show. It was her #1 movie to buy.

Quite probably, plenty of people buying the HD-DVD version don't know what HD-DVD means. They think it means either "REALLY GOOD DVD of something that was ORIGINALLY SHOT IN HD" or "meant for HD-upconverting players"

I bet there are a ton of returns on this one after Christmas.
How does that get reflected?

Negative count for PE on HD DVD the week after Christmas, perhaps?

Wouldn't it be funny if HD DVD sold 80000 discs that week but then 40000 PE's were returned? Quite possibly could be the first 90-10 week for Blu

I'm not sure she mentioned it but the promotions pimping it and tagging her name to it are HD-DVD:

Ah, and of course that probably meant the DVD was sold out everywhere so people grabbed the HD DVD. Or, they see the HD DVD packaging on the site, and think that is the one they are supposed to choose.

Things begin to make sense. Even the much increased Blu-ray sales for it too.

I agree, things are going to be a mess after Xmas. Warner is going to wish the comboed that.

Gary

I am certain they do NOT subtract out returns. The process probably has no way to account for that because they would make the seemingly reasonable assumption that returns occur fairly equally across the board, though as we know this is probably grossly untrue.

No. For the gazillionth time, people are mistakingly picking up thinking they can play it on their upconvert DVD player. I bet if we were able to get a solid number on the amount of HD-DVD's returned between Nov. 20th and January 20th, it would be an absolutely jawdropping figure.

Edit : titles that potentially could cross 100k by end of 2007 :

Bourne on HD, HP on HD (maybe)
HP on BD (maybe), Simpson Movie (longshot). [Superbad is a very long shot, it would have to do 40k total in two weeks)

Did I miss anything else?
Rat? Departed was at 84K, ahead of PotC 1 & 2 in october, plus it has been featured in some recent sales.

Can't wait for the "Oprah Backlash" after Christmas. Can hear it now -- "But dear, Oprah told me to buy it. How was I to know it wouldn't work in our dvd player?"

Returns would not be counted in the Weekly numbers, but don't they count in the YTD and SI numbers?

There is some of this but I'm not convinced that's most of it. The HD-DVd side has been savvy and aggressive in attaching her name to the HD-DVD version. Just look at the link I provided. I haven't seen the same for the blu version.

I would strongly doubt that the process is so robust. As I mentioned, it is simple for them to make the quick assumptions that returns on both formats negate one another as they would with normal DVD titles. They most likely just add the weekly totals in a spreadsheet or database. Do you honestly think they are recalculating the YTD & SI all of the time to capture returns? No, they are just adding the new weeks into their files.

Ok. maybe it is oprah. Except, it should move the DVD version more than the HDM versions. It is more likely the xmas shopping season too compounded with good press. I also don't see why it would outsell TF, among other inexplicable behavior.

What happens if someone walks into Best Buy and Oprah has cleared out the DVD and the HD DVD is on the shelf?
