I am inclined to believe this. She took the fall. Note that she used Amazon as support for the Universal claim (well, she probably didn't have any other point of reference!).

Anyways, it stinks - that is all I can say. I am surprised that VB printed such an article in the first place...

Here is an interesting graph of the performance of Planet Earth before and after Christmas:

Incidentally, PE BD is #17 and PE HD DVD is #20 on Amazon now.

And since he had them on the 26th I would say the 2nd is a safe bet.

Did we get the numbers during Thanksgiving week? I can't remember what title, but there was one title I was very interested in how it did.

DV did not post them until Thursday at 10:11 PM last week and the numbers were delayed until Thursday due to the holiday, I would not expect the numbers until Thursday.

makes you think the BDA should have made a deal with Oprah to plug Blu-ray specificially, maybe giving her audience free players or something.

It scares the hell out of me how much power she has over people.

People who like Oprah tend to like the same stuff she likes, and so she can drive book and movie sales to an extent with a recommendation. But as for real, scary power I don't she has too much of that. For example, she endorsed Barack Obama in the Democratic presidential primary recently, and there was no perceptible movement in his numbers.

There is probably something to the theory that her site mistakenly linking to the HD DVD version of Planet Earth helped it vs. the Blu-ray version, but there are certainly many other factors involved (region coding, the greater number of big Blu-ray titles, etc.).

Nice one!

Very true... after the link on her site got fixed to point to the DVD version, the HD-DVD version of PE started to come out of the stratosphere.

Do you guys see the new BOGO on Amazon which includes the Harry Potter's and Die Hard's and other recent Fox / New Line titles?

The ratings for this week are going to absolutely crush HD DVD. I'm thinking at least 80:20. All of those sales are now hitting with Resident Evil trilogy, Shoot Em Up, and War as new releases. I can't wait until next week now!

I agree it will be an automatic weekly win for Blu-ray. Speaking of Oprah I wonder if either side has thought about pitching a show idea to her. Sales would go through the roof.

The Nielsen report for this week (for sales beginning yesterday) won't be published until January 11. Last week's sales will be reflected in this Friday's report.

Oprah is alright. Alot of women look up to her..I think they all do She stands for a lot of good things for women, a kind of femanism that doesn't involve man-hating especially. She has a ton of money and is very charitable with it. I don't agree with her politically all the time, but it's easy to respect her point of view.

The BDA should have thrown her a few hundred bd players and planet earth disks for her annual "my favorite things" episode. That would have been smart.

Last week we had an influx of "new" members expressing concern due to the Amazon BOGO for HD DVD. Right now a few hours after the Harry Potter movies went on sale they are #2,3,4, and 5 in Amazon rankings for Blu-ray. I know it dosen't mean anything, but it is curious that some of the same members are not posting in this threat to express some excitment? TROLLS!
