I'm sure between the Boxed Set and SM3, Transformers will get it's rear end handed to it. Maybe even the boxed set by itself will beat it.

But I'd love to wait a couple days, and let the HD-DVD camp sweat a little bit over this.

Im excited to hear how good Spider-Man did. They HD folks can say oh its because the box set and Single edition, but come on for people to purchase a $60+ boxset and for that to beat a $25-35 hd movie that would be a huge accomplishment considering its a box set which is selling for double.

The problem here is that if we went to your house and counted we would all assess the total count. The difference between this and Nielsen is that NOT EVERY SALE IS COUNTED and the 40% portion that isn’t is guesstimated based on the other sales at other retailers. People that shop at Wal-Mart have different buying habits than those who shop at places like Magnolia Hi-Fi/Best Buy and Amazon.
no, what you are missing is that this is HD media. Even in DVD I would guess the numbers are relatively the same, but with HD media it will be even more homogeneous. With DVD Walmart has the discount bin that could make a small difference in the numbers, but this is HDoM and there are no discount bins, yes there are a few titles from previous weeks that could be bought, but except for sales there is no reason to believe that Walmart numbers for Transformers would have been extremely different from those from anywhere else. There is no reason to believe that the SM numbers will be completely different last week and there is no reason to believe that Rat would be completely different this week. People that buy HDoM from WM are not going to be buying catalogue en masse when they buy the new ones every where else.

If they sold as many players as they said this could be a problem.

100,000+ players X 10 free movies per player = about 1,000,000 movies plus what ever other crap sales they have going on.

1,000,000 will most certainly beat anything we sell.

Lets hope those free movies won’t count
You always worry.

The $98 A2s only came with 5 free movies over the mail that dont count. Best Buy was selling A3s at $299 with 10 free movies, 5 of which are part of the standard HD DVD over the mail and dont count, 2 of which came in the box and dont get scanned. Only 3 titles were in store and were scanned at checkout. So 3 movies with every A3 purchased not including anything extra they bought. I am not worried at all.

Sorry I can't be more specific. I do not want to arm the HDers in case the prelim numbers are wrong, and my numbers are incomplete anyway.

I don't think you should worry about it

I would agree with you. I cannot imagine the regular Walmart buyer loading up on HD DVD movie titles. Yes, they may have blown out inventory with that price, but it is really going to come down to now the disc sales.

NOV. 7 | Sony Pictures Home Entertainment’s Spider-Man 3 swung to the top of the studio’s Blu-ray roster, selling 130,000 high-def units in its first six days on shelves, according to the studio.

The studio shipped about 400,000 Spider-Man 3 Blu-ray units to retail for the title’s Oct. 30 bow, said Sony, making first-week sell-off about 30%. Sony said that does not include units bundled with the new $399 PlayStation 3.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but isn't the normal weekly sales for HD DVD below 50k?

If that is the case having a 130k plus another huge Pixar title as well as another big bundle AND finally a major pixar catalog title.... I can't see how we'd fail to make less than a 75% for the week.

So is that 130,000 < the 190,000 Paramount claimed Transformer HD DVD units...

Or is that 130,000 > the 88,000/115,000 TF units reported elsewhere?

Why do we still see press releases of that 190,000 claim still to this day? Will news stations be reporting that TF sold more than Spider-man?

Perhaps we will get the #'s on Thursday if they were high enough. The Nielson #'s that included Transformers came out on Thursday instead of Friday.

It has now officially been reported as 130K

Does this include the box set?

Sony Pictures Home Entertainment has revealed that the Blu-ray release of 'Spider-man 3' sold 130,000 copies the first six days at retail, 15,000 more copies than the Transformers HD DVD was reported to have sold its first week on store shelves. Having shipped 400,000 copies to retailers, this represents a 30% sell-off for the title.

Woohoo. I was wrong. SM3 did sell well. Apologies

190k shipped vs 400k shipped

115k sold vs 130k sold

Ouch I guess it's a good thing AVSforum is down. I can only imagine how the hd dvd fanatics will spin this as a positive.

On the high-definition disc charts, Spider-Man 3 was an easy victor on Blu-ray Disc. On the HD DVD chart, Transformers remained at No. 1 for the third consecutive week.
No surprise there.

I assume it does. My guess is something like 100k/30k split (30k being the box).

130k out of 400k shipped is pretty low. No wonder it didn't seem to sell out anywhere. I think it will sell fairly well over the rest of the year, as people make up their mind which one (box or single) to buy.

enjoy
